I also like this series. Most burglars don't pick locks. They use Brute Force, or bypass the lock completely, like jumping over the wooden fence... LPL is just showing us some of the more realistic attacks against locks by criminals. Looking at some of the gun locks he worked on, I would have to say the locks on his property are for your protection. 😂

True. 99cent hammer, 99 cent miniature pry bar and 99 cents worth of wire can get u in just about anything. I used to do foreclosure renovations for a local credit unions mortgage dept. Never came across something "inaccessible". A Pipe wrench could've been useful a few times.

I read about the guys that go into an apartment building with a hockey bag containing a few sections of 4x4 and a hydraulic jack. An admittedly ballsy technique, ripe with risk of discovery during the minute or two it takes them to almost silently force a door open, but if they make it inside, they're golden. No skills required.

I've been recommending these as a budget padlock for about 35 years, I have one on my shed (the shed you could open with a tin opener so security is a moot point) it gets used only in the summer and has been in use for over a decade with zero maintenance and is still as good today as the day it was installed.

Wood is very dense. The screws are inserted into the grain at right angles to the movement as well. Whereas the weld is actually in line with the force. So the weld give first. It would take significant force to dislodge multiple screws at right angles to the force, even if they are short.

I'm not sure how the algorithm directed me to these videos as I am a Chemical Engineer with not even a passing hobbyist interest in locks. But then I got hooked on these videos and have to admit I am close to ordering the lock pick kit just to have fun. One conclusion I have drawn from the various defeats of the broad range of locks included in the series is that no lock is able to withstand a determined attack. What they do is keep honest people honest. I've always thought about the merit of increased security doors on homes when a rock through the window is a faster way in anyway, which is exactly what happened at my work when they climbed through and then took the conference TV off the wall.

The disk padlock I believe is used on containers to prevent theft by the way the lock fits into the container latch preventing easy access to either the lock or the latch. It is a pretty secure method of locking a container unless you screw up and only lock one of the two doors it being the door that is under lapping the other.

the cleverest setup I've seen for the disc padlock is to surround it with a short piece of heavy steel pipe, so that the lock is not susceptible to most types of mechanical attacks.

Excellent videos. Any padlock need to buried inside a steel shroud cover / steel box which provide protection against physical force and access and also makes it very much more difficult for professional pickers. Such a great channel.

Many years ago I was working on a building site.
When we came down from the scaffolding to get changed and go home, we found one of these circular padlocks on our lockup.
It took us nearly an hour to cut it off with a lump hammer and chisel! (the only tools readily available)
The incredible thing was, that nobody called the police!
There we were in the street (this was in London) taking it in turns with the hammer.
When we finally got in, we found that somebody had nicked half our tools.

Mine storage with this lock was nearly broken into with crow bar they bent the metal so much I couldn't open the door when I removed the lock. Manybof the units near mine same thing. To me it looked like they could of gotten it ope. Of they pulled harder or had two people and two crow bars at once. But I don't think they got mine opne unless the facility pushed it closed. guy told class, he went to someone$$$$ house and the guy simply said, "screwdrivers dont fit my hand".... other guy was fix it guy, brought son into the fold... 6 months later son was out on his own making tax free money. i shd have gone out with him, but... good way to get sued so cant have nothing in our name... old van that no one wud want, work van, rent apt, keep dinero in... so they cant find it if sometjhing goes badly.

I really enjoy and appreciate this test, I have a similar disk lock on a storage container box. I intend to beef up the box with a bar and recessed lock where implements can not reach it.

In the newspaper business for 40 years or so. News rack locks had lock guards and Abus disc locks. only to get them off was with a grinder or cutting torch. At that time Abus locks were about $20 each in bulk. Tried many other brands but Abus was the only one that kept the bad guys out.

I think you put more mechanical force one the hasp (rotation momentum) than on the pad lock itself, because the grip of the adjustable wrench prevents the rotation momentum bending the pad lock.

This is why I think monitoring of some sort is probably the best for protecting your things. Cameras, security, alarms, that sort of thing. Although locks and safety could slow an intruder down too.

I am curious how the LockPickingLawyer feels about camera's and other similar security devices.

@Oliver Ruch I haven't seen other videos from this particular series, but that definitely isn't what he said. Sounds quite clearly that he's simply talking about whether this style of lock offers more resistance to a twisting attack than the alternatives. The hasp snapping off means he's reached a clear point of diminishing returns on resisting this type of attack. Much more or a little less resistance to the lock itself breaking from here won't make much difference.

Edit: Having gone to check the other videos from this series, this disk padlock definitely held up better than the other locks he tested before it, so I'm a bit mistaken there. Though, the issues of diminishing returns and security only being as good as its weakest link are still there. I'd expect he has other padlocks in his collection that reach that point while also providing better resistance to being manipulated and picked; I didnt see any of these with more robust padlocks.

@guitourney well I'm on a LPL streak for several months now. He is an extremely talented but also very fair guy. Usually I agree with his opinions on the safety of those locks. But this one here is just wrong. The lock itself had no security issues shown in the vid. And yes he might not recommend any of those locks but you can get very good hints at which lock is good and why. This video here is just an exception. I dunno what was on his mind. I almost expected him to at least rake it open afterwards. So he can justify his opinion somehow...

I like the alarm and zero cameras that guard a similar lock to where a storage locker uses one of these (100s actually, yet one might be mine). I would imagine the door would yield well before the lock would.

Yep, and some insurance policies won't cover theft when the lock isn't cut or torched. My storage facility's policy is like that.

The lesson here is that, a lot of the time, the padlock is considerably stronger than the the thing it is locked to, so attack that first.

If you take a large set of bolt cutters and pinch the housing of the lock right where the shackle goes into it, it causes the casing to split. Then twist the bolt cutters... the face of those type locks will simply peel off and the lock falls apart.
Used to do it all the time for foreclosures/auctions at a storage facility I worked at when I was younger.
They look cool, that's about it.

This is the funny thing about locking things. Sometimes the thing you're locking on to is weaker.

The take-away here is that your lock and mechanism needs to be of similar strength. It makes no sense to go cheap on the hasp, hinges, or other hardware and get a nice lock. The crook is always going to exploit the weakness link.

BTW, I like this series because is shows the most likely method crooks use to defeat locks.

You might be able to remove the hasp from the equation by just interlocking two circular padlocks. Then you could put one in a vice and then twist the other. Then either one breaking is a success. (Unless you break your vice)

When I worked in gyms, typically most lockers were daily use only, and occasionally I'd observe the holy night of Lock Culling, wherein I'd bust out the lock cutters and go ham on violators. Their locks left after hours, not their persons. These circular locks were the bane of my sacred duties, but never once was I defeated. And I am by no means a muscular guy. Yeah, that went EXACTLY as I figured it would. You'll never break a disc lock like that. You can cut them with extremely large bolt cutters. Smaller ones won't do it. Or drill it out or use an electric saw.

It's made for more heavy duty applications for instance heavy duty chain ⛓ they're usually hardened and if made of the same thickness material as the lock. Might not be bothered by your pipe wrench. Not only because of strength alone but twist position. But if they want it bad enough they'll get it anyway. Or just damage it whatever it is.

I would suspect that these round padlocks are significantly weaker to impact style attacks, as that is the kind of lock our storage company uses, and I accidentally dropped mine, and the shackle no longer engaged with any part of the lock, spinning freely by hand.

I would like to see this test against the same padlock but with a purpose made staple and hasp which is designed for this type of lock. Preferably fixed to something sturdy like a steel container. It would be interesting to see what fails first.

I think "hidden shackle" puck lock might be a better option for a hasp in the open, depends where it is, if it's a shed I think this disc lock is perfectly adequate, if it's exposed to the public like a gate on a footpath, hidden shackle is better

Coincidentally, just the other day, as part of my property management duties, I had to remove one of these, almost identical to the one in the video. It took about 30 seconds to chop the thing is half with a cordless sawzall. Instead of attacking the only hardened part of the lock, I cut the whole thing in half transversely, the shell of that thing was like cutting a Coke can in half.

I have several Brinks Disc padlocks. One on my shed where I store my motorcycle, lawn mower, weed eater and leaf blower. and my tool box on wheels. I also keep my propane grill in the shed as well. I also made a motor powered dead bolt to secure the door to the other door I use large nails to secure the door to the floor and door frame.

I use a twelve inch crescent wrench to open most locks. They twist pretty easily. But the lock is only as good as what it is attached to. Most hasp can be broke with a pair of four inch vicegrips.

If you haven’t already made a video on this, what in your opinion, is the most effective way to secure a motorcycle in an apartment complex? I park mine under a carport and just park my car in an uncovered space next to the motorcycle. Only protection I have on the bike currently is a motorcycle tarp cover and cheap Amazon disc brake with an alarm. I know I can do better and just want an expert opinion such as yourself... thank you a ton !!

It's not the paddlock, it's how you hold the wrench. The shackle is circular shaped and probably quite long, so your wrench probably has a hold on it on both ends. And since it's circular, it has no real weak spots, so no wonder the hasp broke off.

Should imagine that method will work with most padlocks!

I used to repair wheel magazines for an explosives company. There were two locks on the doors of these mags and you had to reach up and inside the bottom of a bottomless boxes welded to the door to get at the padlocks. The boxes prevented you from using a pipe wrench or a pry bar on the locks.

Another very good method of preventing someone from using force of this kind is to put the lock and the hasp inside the door. You cut a hole about six inches in diameter through the door so that you can reach in to unlock the padlock but the placement of the hole precludes the use of a lever tool since you cannot move your arm to operate it. The hole is covered with a tear drop shaped cover that gravity holds in place to keep the rain out.

Most hasps can be defeated with a file or battery powered grinder, a pin punch, and a small hammer. Simply remove the riveted over edge on the top or bottom of the hinge pin with the file or grinder and drive the pin out. Hasp falls apart an in you go. Exposed hinges are much the same.

The disc padlock SHOULD provide you with more confidence that it will provide significant additional protection because not all staples and hasps will be as weak as those in this video.
