Destination Unknown
After the Fall Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
No destination, no reason why.
And on this plane he looks out
Not knowing who and when,
What will fit.
And if I knew where I was going,
I would already be there
I would already be there
A train departs from platform
Their thoughts are where their feelings were
The tracks they bend, they stay straight
No turning back, don't hesitate.
And if I knew where I was going,
I would already be there
And if I knew where I was going
I would already be there.
Anywhere, anything
Just what we're meant for
Anywhere, anything
Just what we're meant for
Anyone...
And if I knew where I was going,
I would already be there
And if I knew where I was going
I would already be there.

The lyrics to After the Fall's song "Destination Unknown" depict a sense of uncertainty and lack of direction in life. The first verse describes a plane taking off without a set destination or reason. The singer of the song looks out of the plane, feeling unsure of who they are and where they belong.
The chorus highlights the frustration of not knowing one's destination. The repetition of the line "And if I knew where I was going, I would already be there" emphasizes the desire to have a clear path and purpose in life. There is a longing for direction and a yearning to be already settled and content in a chosen path.
The second verse shifts the focus to a train departing from a platform. The passengers on the train are described as having their thoughts in a place where their feelings used to be. This could suggest a sense of detachment or disconnection from their emotions, perhaps reflecting a feeling of being lost or unsure of what they truly want.
The bridge section highlights the idea that it doesn't matter where or what the singer ends up doing, as long as it aligns with their true purpose. The repetition of "Anywhere, anything, just what we're meant for" suggests a willingness to go anywhere and do anything that feels right and fulfilling.
Overall, "Destination Unknown" portrays a sense of restlessness and a search for meaning and direction in life. The lyrics reflect the universal struggle of not knowing where one is headed and the desire to find a sense of purpose and fulfillment.
