The canon background story is that Afterglow is a band of five childhood friends. When Ran (Vo.) moved to a different class in middle school, the girls made a band so they could still see each other. If Only
Afterglow Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
If only they could understand,
If only they had looked into his eyes
To understand what sort of man.
If only they had seen,
If only they had known.
If only they had heard
If only they had listened to the words He spoke;
The greatest of all time.
If only they had heard,
If only they had known.
Had I been there, could I stem the tide?
Could I stand my ground and hold on 'til the end?
Or, in my weakness, would I fail the test?
Would I show my faith and prove myself a friend?
If only I could know,
If only I had felt the pain,
How could I do the things I've done?
At times it seems He sacrificed in vain.
If only I could feel,
If only I could know.
If only I could show,
The gratitude I feel inside
Despite my weakness;
Every time I try to change,
His love can't be denied.
It's hidden in my heart,
It's written in my soul.
Wanna share it with you now.
If only you could know.
The song If Only by Afterglow is a reflection on the missed chances and lost opportunities to know and understand Jesus Christ. It is a lamentation on the collective failure of people around Jesus to comprehend the magnitude of his teachings and the impact they could have had on the world. The opening lines of the song express regret that Jesus' contemporaries did not fully grasp the importance of his message and the kind of person he was. The use of 'if only' conveys a sense of longing and anguish, as the writer wishes that things could have been different.
The song then shifts its focus to the singer's own experience of encountering Jesus. He wonders how he would have responded if he had lived during Jesus' time. Would he have been strong enough to stand up for his beliefs, or would he have given in to weakness and failed the test? He expresses guilt and remorse over his actions and feels that he has let Jesus down in some way. However, despite his shortcomings, he acknowledges the immense love and sacrifice that Jesus made and is grateful for it. He concludes the song by expressing a desire to share this love with others, hoping that they too could come to know and appreciate Jesus' message.
