All for Nothing
Against Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

A jail cell is freedom from the pain in my home
Hatred passed on, passed on and passed on
A world of violent rage
But it's one that I can recognize
Having never seen the color of my father's eyes
Yes, I dwell in hell, but it's a hell that I can grip
I tried to grip my family
But I slipped

To escape from the pain in an existence mundane
I gotta nine, a sign, a set and now I gotta name

Read my writing on the wall
No-one's here to catch me when I fall
Death is on my side, suicide!

Caught between my culture and the system, genocide!

Read my writing on the wall
No-one's here to catch me when I fall
If ignorance is bliss, then knock the smile off my face
Yeah!

If we don't take action now
We settle for nothing later
Settle for nothing now
And we'll settle for nothing later
If we don't take action now
We settle for nothing later
We'll settle for nothing now
And we'll settle for nothing later

If we don't take action now
We'll settle for nothing later
We settle for nothing now
And we'll settle for nothing later
If we don't take action now
We settle for nothing later

We'll settle for nothing now
And we'll settle for nothing later

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Against's song, "All for Nothing," speak about the pain and violence that the singer experienced in their home and the lack of support they received from family and society. The first verse describes how being in a jail cell is preferable to the pain at home, as hatred has been passed down from generation to generation. The singer recognizes the world's violent tendencies, having never seen the color of their father's eyes, and they find it easier to exist in hell than to try and cope with their troubled family. The second half of the verse speaks about the singer's attempt to escape the mundanity of their existence through violence and gang life.

The chorus reinforces the idea of the singer's isolation and lack of support. Death and suicide seem to be the only constants in their life, and they feel caught between their culture and the system, facing genocide.

The second verse repeats the first with slightly different wording, but the bridge and the final chorus provide a call to action. The singer acknowledges that they will settle for nothing, and neither should others. The repetition of the chorus with slight variations emphasizes the importance of taking action to prevent settling for a life of pain and violence.

Overall, the song speaks to the cycles of violence and pain that can plague individuals and families, as well as the lack of support and systemic issues that can exacerbate these problems. However, the song also provides a call to action to break these cycles and strive for a better world.

The first against me song that I was ever exposed to. My uncle was playing it when I was a freshman in his. He went on to be heavily addicted to drugs and we lost touch. I spent almost three years searching for this song, and I’m so glad I did. Ten years down the road this is the only connection I have to my uncle, who is now wandering the streets of SF in search of heroin. This song has changed my life in so many ways I wish I could thank Tom personally for this and vivid a vis in its entirety. Oops I mean laura

"I'm not giving up on the claim that I can save the world, and all I need is my friends" Used to listen to this E.P. and Vivida Vis over and over again back in the day. I remember that after Reinventing Axl Rose came out, I started working my way back through Toms early demo recordings and coming across this and that cassette comp Tom featured on with Crasshole Records. Haven't had a musical journey that's rivaled it since.

this is what i absolutely love about punk! the heart in this song, the [almost]desperation to be heard, the power. this is punk as fuck

Awesome song. Here are the lyrics if anyone's interested.

We can have a day from here, if you'll take your heart put some faith in ideals. The bank line will all turn around and rent will pay itself. You can sleep tonight, little boys in sweat-shops will again be children and tonight they'll eat the lions share. Bombing skies will sing silent and the anger turn to laughter. On the crucifix Christ will turn his head and admit his own sin he was a martyr for. Your shoulders just as heavy there is no mercy from three holes and a bleeding forehead helping my life. Rob the promise and direction given to me. We're bound to self righteous living. Fingers rapping on the counter, patience wearing thin. It's just another work week, arthritis at 18 for a minimum living. Who has time to breathe, catch it before it's over, catch it before it eats you. Hello perspective this is just the human condition. It's universal love my god I think it's spreading. They'll kick you when you're down. Push you down when you're stumbling. Another day of dying is just evolution. You said freedom was a hope away an hand or a hard push. Is this inclusive thinking? We run by a thread, tongue in cheek idealists. I'm not giving up the claim that I can save the world and all I need is my friends.
