Against Me! Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Feeling like I need to fall down some stairs
Maybe lay face down in the river and float
Perfect weather for a head wound
Or studying sophisticated nuances of putting holes in your lungs
One fifty Marilyns, the war and the bomb
All reasons to be fearful but every day still new to wake up
Three hundred and thirty three, say that they knew me
Three hundred and thirty three, bring it all back to me

All the devils that you don't know
Can all come along for the ride
I wanna be as close as I can get to you
All the devils that you don't know
Can all come along for the ride
I wanna be as close as I can get to you

I saw the 'Renown Orders of the Night' in person
Why would I ever meet that with irony or cynicism?
Planned views and elevations walking through your tarot garden
Visible mutations fading right before your fucking eyes
Cycles of death and regeneration, sensations of absence and loss
Wish you had been there by my side to see it all
Three hundred and thirty three, say that they knew me
Three hundred and thirty three, bring your love back to me

All the devils that you don't know
Can all come along for the ride
I wanna be as close as I can get to you
All the devils that you don't know
Can all come along for the ride
I wanna be as close as I can get to you

All the devils that you don't know
Can all come along for the ride
All the devils that you don't know
Can all come along for the ride
All the devils that you don't know

Can all come along for the ride
I wanna be as close as I can get to you

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of Against Me!'s "333" paint a picture of feeling hopeless and overwhelmed, as if the only recourse is to fall down stairs or float face down in a river. The following lyrics delve into darker topics, such as cigarettes and their impact on the lungs, and the frightening realities of war and bombs. Despite the fearsome backdrop, the song delivers a hopeful message that tomorrow is a new day, and waking up is reason enough to keep going. The repetition of "three hundred and thirty three" serves as a reminder that there are people who know us and love us, and who can help us through.

The lyrics continue with a reference to "the Renown Orders of the Night," which could be interpreted as a reference to secret societies or organizations that do their work behind closed doors. The singer insists that they would never approach something like that with irony or cynicism, perhaps suggesting a desire for a deeper connection and understanding of the world. The song concludes with the refrain that all the demons in the world cannot keep the singer from wanting to be close to their loved one.

Overall, "333" presents a bleak picture of the world but offers a glimmer of hope through the connections we make with others.

"All the devils that you don't know can all come along for the ride / I want to be as close as I can get to you"

The song is about falling in love with a person and wanting to let them get to know even the terrible things about yourself to get as close to them as possible, and celebrating that closeness, celebrating being prepared to share that level of vulnerability. Some of the lyrics seem dark but Laura Jane Grace was quoted saying it was meant to be an optimistic song.

So as the video starts the man and woman wake up and are both dissatisfied. It's pretty vague about what, but probably about their relationship. It seems rather unfulfilling. After the man leaves, the woman cleans the house compulsively, goes over her appearance compulsively, imagining him watching her, even practicing dancing ... she seems imprisoned in the house by this. It's like she has OCD or something. But it's also like she has something to hide. Like there's a distance in the relationship because she isn't letting her partner see the dirt. The face without the makeup and jewelry. The devils.

So at the end she takes off the makeup, takes off the eyelashes and jewelry and all the other crap. And she's happy and she's liberated, and she's finally going to let her partner see that.

Whether or not he's abusive to her as some people are guessing ... I'm not sure. Kinda comes down to "why did she feel
like she had to hide so much from him?" Could be that he was abusive and forced her to. But we all hide things from each other all the time. Especially for trans women, sheesh, that can involve LOTS of hiding, even hiding from a partner who shows you nothing but love and support. Will they stop loving you if you stop pretending to be this person? You don't know until you try. But without being authentic, the relationship is doomed to end anyway, and at the start of the video it seems like the relationship really is dying.

So if the guy's abusive then I guess it's probably time for their relationship to end because she's not gonna take it anymore. But if it's more that she was scared to show him the devils ... then their relationship seems like it's about to get a lot better. I prefer that interpretation because it fits with the triumphant feeling of the song.
