I Still Love You Julie
Against Me! Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
A room full, drunk,
Sang along to the songs I never had
The courage to write.
Given the chance
I'd stay in this chorus forever,
Where everything ugly in this world
Is sadly beautiful
No, we're not
Gonna call everyone on their shit tonight,
Even though the half of you won't even smile
The next time we pass on the street.
Maybe somehow
This scam will still save us all
Still save us all
Still save us all
Still save us all
(Will save us all)
Still save us all
Then I saw you
Dancing at a punk rock show
And for a moment
We walked the streets that everyone else
Had given up to 4 AM,
'Cause promises
And spray paint marking
Everywhere we went
And every direction
Only going as far
As we let it.
There's so many things
We try to do truthfully.
By the time it's through with us,
It all falls apart.
Maybe somehow
This scam will still save us all.
Still save us all
(Will save us all.)
Still save us all.
Still save us all
(Will save us all.)
Still save us all.
The lyrics to Against Me!'s "I Still Love You Julie" paint a vivid picture of the complexities of relationships and the power of shared experiences. The first verse describes a scene where the singer is surrounded by a group of people who are all singing along to songs that the singer never had the courage to write. The chorus is where the singer wants to stay forever, where everything ugly in the world is beautifully expressed through shared memories. The second verse is more of a flashback where the singer saw Julie dancing at a punk rock show and they walked the streets at 4 AM, surrounded by promises and spray paint markings. The lyrics reveal that things fall apart no matter how hard we try to make them work but maybe, just maybe, some sort of scam will still save them all.
The song is about the bittersweet nature of memories and the power of shared experiences. It's an acknowledgment of the inevitable decay of time and the difficulty of holding onto something that's slipping away. It's about the hope that we can somehow preserve the moments that matter most in our lives.
Line by Line Meaning
Last night,
The previous evening,
A room full, drunk,
An area occupied by intoxicated individuals,
Sang along to the songs I never had
Singing to tunes I lacked the audacity to compose.
The courage to write.
The nerve to put pen to paper.
Given the chance
If presented with the opportunity,
I'd stay in this chorus forever,
I would remain in this musical harmony infinitely,
Where everything ugly in this world
In a place where all the repugnant things of the world,
Is sadly beautiful
Becomes strangely attractive and moving.
In our desperate memories.
Within our memories of misery and longing.
No, we're not
No, we will not
Gonna call everyone on their shit tonight,
Expose everyone's deceitfulness tonight,
Even though the half of you won't even smile
Even though half of the room won't even smile
The next time we pass on the street.
The next time we encounter each other in public.
Maybe somehow
By some means,
This scam will still save us all
This fraud will still rescue all of us.
Still save us all
Continuing to save everyone.
Still save us all
Continuing to save everyone.
Still save us all
Continuing to save everyone.
(Will save us all)
(Saving us all)
Still save us all
Continuing to save everyone.
Then I saw you
Then I observed you
Dancing at a punk rock show
Dancing at a live performance of punk rock.
And for a moment
For a brief period of time,
We walked the streets that everyone else
We strolled the avenues that others
Had given up to 4 AM,
Had abandoned to the early hours of the morning,
'Cause promises
Due to our commitments
And spray paint marking
And graffiti tags
Everywhere we went
Wherever we ventured
And every direction
And regardless of which way we wandered
Only going as far
Venturing only a certain distance
As we let it.
As long as we permitted it.
There's so many things
There exist so many things
We try to do truthfully.
That we attempt to do honestly.
By the time it's through with us,
When it is finished with us,
It all falls apart.
Everything disintegrates.
Maybe somehow
Perhaps through some means,
This scam will still save us all.
This fraud will still rescue all of us.
Still save us all
(Will save us all.)
Continuing to save everyone (Rescuing all).
Still save us all.
Continuing to save everyone.
Still save us all
(Will save us all.)
Continuing to save everyone (Rescuing all).
Still save us all.
Continuing to save everyone.
