Hideous Headchopping
Agathocles Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I've built my little castle,
Based on apathy.
And now I'm truly armed,
Against insecurity.
Stone cold thoughts,
Behind a grieving mask,
Furious eyes,
Analysing silly lies.
Ferousious grey mass,
Non-believing in a cross,
An aim so insane,
The last leaf must be slain.
A wood-chopping sound,
Goes in my head around,

The tree that once stood
Has now been chopped for good

Overall Meaning

In the lyrics of Agathocles's song Hideous Headchopping, the singer talks about building their own little fortress of apathy in order to protect themselves from insecurity. The castle is a metaphor for the singer's state of mind - they have closed themselves off and have become indifferent to the world around them. The singer's thoughts have hardened and are represented as "stone cold". Their face bears a "grieving mask" that hides their true emotions. They are vigilant against anything they perceive as fake, hence their "ferocious eyes" who analyze "silly lies".

Yet despite this tough exterior, the singer reveals a deep sense of nihilism. They do not believe in anything, specifically rejecting Christianity as represented by the cross. Moreover, their ultimate goal is to destroy everything and anything that stands in their way, even if it means ending life itself. This is represented by the "last leaf" which must be "slain". The sound of an axe chopping wood echoes in their head, symbolizing their destructive intentions. The final line of the song, "the tree that once stood has now been chopped for good", emphasizes this violent and destructive nature.

The song can be interpreted as a critique of apathy and nihilism. The singer's fortress of apathy may protect them from the world, but it also separates them from any meaningful experience or connection to others. They reject all that is good - represented by Christianity - and value destruction above all else. Agathocles presents a bleak picture of a person who has lost all hope and has become consumed by their own anger and negativity.
