Nobody's Child
Agnes Chan Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I was slowly passing an orphan's home one day
And stopped there for a moment just to watch the children play
Alone a boy was standing and when I asked him why
He turned with eyes that could not see and he began to cry

I'm nobody's child, I'm nobody's child
Just like a flower I'm growing wild
No mommy's kisses and no daddy's smile
Nobody wants me I'm nobody's child

People come for children and take them for their own
But they all seem to pass me by and I am left alone
I know they'd like to take me but when they see I'm blind
They always take some other child and I am left behind

I'm nobody's child, I'm nobody's child
Just like a flower I'm growing wild
No mommy's kisses and no daddy's smile
Nobody wants me I'm nobody's child

No mother's arms to hold me or soothe me when I cry
Sometimes it gets so lonely here I wish that I could die
I'd walk the streets of heaven where all the blind can see
And just like all the other kids there'd be a home for me

I'm nobody's child, I'm nobody's child
Just like a flower I'm growing wild

No mommy's kisses and no daddy's smile
Nobody wants me I'm nobody's child

Overall Meaning

Agnes Chan's song "Nobody's Child" is a song that tells the story of a young orphan boy who lives in an orphanage and feels unwanted and unloved. The opening passages describe the moment that the singer stopped outside the orphanage and watched the children play. The mood of the song is set by the soft, melancholic melody and the emotional lyrics. The first chorus introduces the theme of the song, which is the boy's feeling of abandonment and loneliness.

As the song progresses, we learn more about the boy's circumstances. Despite his being alone, the boy longs for the love of a mother and father. He speaks of other children being taken away to loving families, but he himself is overlooked because he is blind. He laments the fact that he doesn't have the same chances as other children.

The final verse is the most poignant. The boy speaks of his longing for love and acceptance, and of his wish to be like the other children, with a home of his own. The verse speaks of the hopelessness and despair that the boy feels, and the song ends on a sad note.

Overall, "Nobody's Child" is a moving song about the plight of children who are alone in the world, and the hope that they will find love and acceptance someday.
