two of us
Aimee Mann & Michael Penn Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Two of us riding nowhere
Spending someone´s hard earned pay
You and me Sunday driving
Not arriving on our way back home
We´re on our way back home
We´re on our way home
We´re going home
Two of us sending postcards
Writing letters on my wall
You and me burning matches
Lifting latches on our way back home
We´re on our way home
We´re on our way home
We´re going home

You and I have memories
Longer than the road
That stretches out ahead

Two of us wearing raincoats
Standing solo in the sun
You and me chasing paper
Getting nowhere on our way back home
We´re on our way back home
We´re on our way home
We´re going home

You and I have memories
Longer than the road
That stretches out ahead

Two of us wearing raincoats
Standing solo in the sun
You and me chasing paper
Getting nowhere on our way back home
We´re on our way back home
We´re on our way home

We´re going home
We´re going home

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Aimee Mann's song "Two of Us" describe the story of a couple who are spending someone else's money, driving around aimlessly, and sending postcards while burning matches and lifting latches. Despite getting nowhere and chasing meaningless things, they share a special bond that is reflected in their memories that are longer than the road ahead of them. The couple is in a state of limbo, not arriving at their destination but on their way back home, where they ultimately belong.

The first verse describes the couple's directionless journey, riding nowhere and spending someone else's hard-earned pay. The second verse illustrates how they are communicating with each other through postcards and letters on a wall, burning matches and lifting latches as they travel. The overlapping chorus emphasizes the idea that the couple is on their way back home, where they belong, and their memories are the only enduring things that will stretch beyond their journey.

Overall, the song seems to suggest that the journey is not as important as the relationship between the two individuals. The two are bonded by their memories, and they are each other's home, regardless of where they are headed or what they are doing. The idea of chasing paper and getting nowhere serves as a metaphor for the meaningless aspects of life that distract from the important things.

Dos de nosotros cabalgando a ninguna parte
gastar el dinero de alguien
Pago duramente ganado
Tu y yo el domingo manejando
no llegar
En nuestro camino de regreso a casa
estamos de camino a casa
estamos de camino a casa
Estamos yendo a casa
Dos de nosotros enviando postales
Escribiendo cartas
En mi pared
tu y yo quemando fósforos
Pestillos de elevación
En nuestro camino de regreso a casa
estamos de camino a casa
estamos de camino a casa
Estamos yendo a casa
tu y yo tenemos recuerdos
Más largo que el camino que se extiende por delante
Dos de nosotros usando impermeables
De pie solo
En el sol
tu y yo persiguiendo papel
llegar a ninguna parte
En nuestro camino de regreso a casa
estamos de camino a casa
estamos de camino a casa
Estamos yendo a casa
tu y yo tenemos recuerdos
Más largo que el camino que se extiende por delante
Dos de nosotros usando impermeables
De pie solo

estamos de camino a casa
estamos de camino a casa
Estamos yendo a casa

My partner has been in hospital for the last month after suffering from a traumatic brain injury. He's coming home tomorrow. I went for a drink in a local pub of mine and after about five minutes, the musicians started this, which is a song I love anyway. But that last "We're going home" sent the onion chopping ninjas right my way. Cried my eyes out, but happy tears ❤️

I had the I Am Sam CD when it first came out, and listened so many times, I wore it out. Yet I never bothered to look at who was singing this duet. 🤭😧The soundtrack was a ginormous hit, the film, not so much.

What extraordinarily gifted brothers!

@mpmajer

This is the best Beatle Cover I have heard.

Got to see Michael Penn long ago in Charlotte, NC with about 25 or so people. Ten feet away. Hung out with him for a little while between sets. It was him and Patrick Warren. They sounded fantastic. Best artist I've seen live that intimately that wasn't work in the studio (I'm a guitarist). All the interesting parts to his arrangement and the sound effects, etc were all there on the keyboard and his singing and acoustic and electric playing was great of course. Everyone there was just amazed how small the crowd was and knew we were all getting a special treat but I felt bad in that he should have a much larger audience.

I was at the Atlanta airport in 2002 about to join the Army, listening to this on the headphones in the music store, thinking about my baby brother, and crying

@MrTitaniumFox
