Àfrica
Akon Feat. G-Unit Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I know that we have to take it to the goal
'cause everyone's depending on we
See we ain't got nowhere to go but up,
It's our destiny

We're choosing the way,
We'll do what it takes to get
To the top of the highest mountain
We'll do anything, we got to prove ourselves
'cause we know

Oh Africa

See we'll never be able to forget this day
'cause it's the greatest day of our life
See no matter what happens at least we can say
"we came, we saw, we tried"

We're choosing nowhere,
We'll do what it takes to get
To the top of the highest mountain
We'll do anything, we got to prove ourselves
'cause we know

Oh Africa

This is our time to shine,
Our time to fly,
Our time to be inside the sky
Our time to soar,
Our time to saw,
The last one in football

Oh Africa

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Akon's song "Oh Africa" paint a portrait of a group of people who are determined to succeed and are willing to do whatever it takes to reach their goals. The opening lines reveal the task at hand, which is to achieve what people depend on them to do. There are no other options; the only path is up, and they are destined to get there. The second verse echoes this determination, with the words "We'll do what it takes to get/To the top of the highest mountain." The phrase "We'll do anything" emphasizes that there is no limit to their commitment to proving themselves.

The final verse is a celebration of the process itself. The line "This is our time to shine" underscores the significance of the moment and the newfound sense of purpose that the group has discovered. The reference to being "inside the sky" suggests that they have achieved something almost supernatural, given that humans can't typically soar through the air. The final line "The last one in football" is a reference to the traditional African game of football, which is played with a ball made of woven banana leaves. It is a testament to the vibrancy of African culture, which informs the entire song.

OMG!! 😍😍😍
I had this song on my iPod and At that time, I went to school listening 50 Cent, G-Unit, Akon, Ja Rule, Eminem and a bunch of other talented Hip Hop/Rapper artists until one day, he had a problem and I lost all the songs, including this one that you posted my friend. 👏👏👏
The world was changing and I ended up getting to know and moving to electronic music, but sometimes I listen to these classics, always keeping a huge respect and affection for all these talented artists who were part of my life in that incredible time of the 2000s (Great Times) 😭
(50 Cent was an inspiration for me in my clothes and I went to school wearing a bandana sometimes and always with a flat brim cap turned to the side with the brim next to my ear, and to this day I do that) 😊
(These artist are great legends will never be forgotten, and thank you for posting this one track because thanks to you I know again who the singers are after this long time has passed) 😭👏🙏
