His mother named him Albano because, when he was born, his father was fighting in Albania for the Italian Army during World War II.
He made his debute in 1966 both as a singer, at the Festival delle Rose, and on television. He won the Disco per l'Estate, an Italian song contest, with "Pensando a te" in 1968. He recorded some major hits such as "La siepe" and "Nel sole" at that time.
He married Romina Power (daughter of the American actor Tyrone Power), the woman who had already started to share her musical career with him, on July 26, 1970.
Al Bano returned to his solo career in 1996 with È la mia vita which was followed by Verso il sole in 1997 and Ancora in volo in 1999.
Santa Lucia
Al Bano Carrisi Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴
l'astro d'argento
placida
la brezza
e tutto è silenzio
Vecchiarello, che dai remi ascoltando
sospirando, tu puoi sentir il vento
che dolcemente
infrange la gelida
quiete dell'onda.
O Santa Lucia, dolce isola del mare,
su te il solee scenderà
e l'odore delle tue rose
pieno il vento sarà.
Santa Lucia, divina,
tu sei la madre adorata degli emigranti,
e il tuo popolo viaggia sulla nave della speranza.
In English, the lyrics translate to "On the shining sea, the silver star shines, and everything is silent. Oh, little old man, listening to the oars, sighing, you can feel the wind that gently breaks the icy stillness of the waves. Oh, Santa Lucia, sweet island of the sea, the sun will set on you, and the scent of your roses will fill the wind. Divine Santa Lucia, you are the beloved mother of immigrants, and your people travel on the ship of hope."
The song Santa Lucia, written by E. A. Mario and composed by Teodoro Cottrau in 1849, is a famous Italian folk song that tells the story of a fisherman who sings to Santa Lucia, the patron saint of the blind, as he sails on the calm sea. The lyrics are filled with romance, passion, and nostalgia that evoke the beauty of the sea, the scent of roses, and the hopes and dreams of emigrants. The song has been recorded by many famous Italian singers, including Mario Lanza, Andrea Bocelli, and Luciano Pavarotti, and has become one of the most popular Italian songs in the world.
