Dinner at Eight
Al Bowlly Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

In your appointment book
you'll see you and I have a date
Let me refresh your memory;
darling you can't be late.
Don't forget, dinner at eight,

Two gardenias at your plate !
Under the table our hands will meet!

We should be able to be discreet
Lights are dim, moonlight above,
That's how people fall in love!

Just tell your mother you might be late
Don't forget, dinner at eight.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Al Bowlly's song Dinner at Eight depict love and an intimate dinner date. The singer tells his lover that they have a date to attend to and that it is essential for the person not to be late. The dinner is supposed to be a special occasion as there are two gardenias on the plate, which signifies the importance of the date. However, the singer also tells the person that they need to be discreet while they are having dinner, which implies that the relationship might not be sanctioned. Despite this, the singer still believes that it is okay as the couple will show affection by holding hands under the table. The ambiance of the dinner is also romantic as there is dim lighting and a beautiful moon above, which is typical of a setting where people fall in love. Finally, the singer asks the person to let their mother know that they might be late for the occasion. Hence, the lyrics show that despite the complexity of the relationship, the singer and the person will have an intimate date.

Awesome! Al Bowlly was just flat awesome. His life cut short prematurely and tragically. This and his version of "There's Something in the Air" are the best there are. Thank you for this.

Who is the orchestra for this? It isn't one I've heard before. Just as wonderful as the others he did.

Looking at the discography it may have been October 1933 with the Ray Noble orchestra. The orchestra then was largely made up of Lew Stone regulars from the Monseigneur.

Anybody remember Danny Stiles? In New York? He used to play this a lot on his radio show.

People are probably getting a bit too old to remember. And that's a pity. A time that should be remembered in radio entertainment.
