The Very Thought of You
Al Bowlly and Monia Liter Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
The little ordinary things that everyone ought to do
I'm living in a kind of daydream
I'm happy as a king
And foolish though it may seem
To me that's everything
The mere idea of you, the longing here for you
I see your face in every flower
Your eyes in stars above
It's just the thought of you
The very thought of you, my love
The mere idea of you, the longing here for you
You'll never know how slow the moments go till I'm near to you
I see your face in every flower
Your eyes in stars above
It's just the thought of you
The very thought of you, my love
In "The Very Thought of You," Al Bowlly with Ray Noble and his Orchestra sings about the all-consuming nature of love. The singer describes how the mere thought of their lover can make them forget the little things in life that they should be doing. To the singer, the thought of their lover is all they need to be happy. They describe it as living in a kind of daydream, feeling as happy as a king despite it seeming foolish to others.
The second verse continues to express the idea that the singer's longing for their lover is all-consuming. They describe how time seems to slow down until they are reunited with their lover. The singer sees their lover's face in every flower and their eyes in stars above. To the singer, everything is just the thought of their lover. The very thought of their lover is what brings them happiness and fulfillment.
Overall, "The Very Thought of You" is a beautiful love song that captures the all-encompassing nature of love. The lyrics describe how love can make us forget the small things in life and make us feel as though we are living in a dream.

My grandmother was born in 1930 in Chicago. This was her time. She played the piano JUST like this. It's like hearing her play again. :-)

Such a beautiful song. He covers it very well. And a GREAT piano!! It’ll go into my library so I can listen to it often. This was my first wife’s and my favorite tune (by Doris Day). Lost her at 22. Miss her and think of her EVERY day!!
