Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer
Alam Jackson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You know Dasher and Dancer and Prancer and Vixon
Comet and Cupid and Donner and Blitzen
But do you recall the most famous reindeer of all

Rudolph, the red-nosed reindeer
Had a very shiny nose.
And if you ever saw him,
You would even say it glows.

All of the other reindeer
Used to laugh and call him names.
They never let poor Rudolph
Join in any reindeer games.

Then one foggy Christmas eve
Santa came to say:
Hey, Rudolph with your nose so bright,
Won't you guide my sleigh tonight?

Then how the reindeer loved him
As they shouted out with glee:
Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer,
You'll go down in history!

Then one foggy Christmas eve
Santa came to say:
Hey, Rudolph with your nose so bright,
Won't you guide my sleigh tonight?

Then how the reindeer loved him
As they shouted out with glee:
Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer,
You'll go down in history!

Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer,
You'll go down in history!...

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of the song, "You know Dasher and Dancer and Prancer and Vixen, Comet and Cupid and Donner and Blitzen," serve as a sort of preamble to the main subject of the song: Rudolph, the red-nosed reindeer. These are the names of Santa's eight reindeer, who pull his sleigh through the night sky. The singer then asks if the listener recalls the most famous reindeer of all, which again alludes to Rudolph.

The first verse then introduces Rudolph, who is famous for having a very shiny nose that appears to glow in the dark. However, despite his unique and remarkable feature, the other reindeer used to laugh and call him names, and never allowed him to participate in their games. This made Rudolph feel isolated and unappreciated, which is a common sentiment among those who are different from others.

The story then takes an uplifting turn when Santa Claus comes to Rudolph on a foggy Christmas Eve and asks him to guide his sleigh with his bright nose. Due to the weather conditions, Santa is unable to see where he is going, but Rudolph's nose lights the way and helps guide the sleigh safely on its journey. The other reindeer, who once ostracized Rudolph, now love and appreciate him as the hero who saved Christmas. The song ends with the assurance that Rudolph will go down in history as the most famous reindeer of all.
