Remember When
Alan Jackson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Remember when I was young and so were you
And time stood still and love was all we knew
You were the first, so was I
We made love and then you cried
Remember when

Remember when we vowed the vows and walked the walk
Gave our hearts, made the start and it was hard
We lived and learned, life threw curves
There was joy, there was hurt
Remember when

Remember when old ones died and new were born
And life was changed, disassembled, rearranged
We came together, fell apart
And broke each other's hearts
Remember when

Remember when the sound of little feet
Was the music we danced to week to week
Brought back the love, we found trust
Vowed we'd never give it up
Remember when

Remember when thirty seemed so old
Now lookin' back, it's just a steppin' stone
To where we are, where we've been
Said we'd do it all again
Remember when

Remember when we said when we turned gray
When the children grow up and move away
We won't be sad, we'll be glad
For all the life we've had
And we'll remember when

Remember when
Remember when

Overall Meaning

The song, "Remember When" by Alan Jackson is a touching and reflective ballad that takes the listener through a journey of love, marriage, challenges, and the beauty of growing old together. The song starts with a nostalgic recollection of young love when the world seemed so simple and peaceful, and love was the only thing that mattered. The listener is taken through the journey of life that the couple embarks on from their marital vows to the difficult times and heartbreaks that test their love, to the arrival of new life, and the realization that growing old together is a blessing.

The first stanza of the song talks about the beginning of their love story, where time stood still, and they were each other's firsts. It portrays a time when they were young and in love, and the world outside of their relationship did not matter. However, that love soon blossomed into something much more significant when they made their vows and started a life of their own. Through the ups and downs of their marriage, they learned the curveballs that life can throw at them, and despite the hurt and sorrow, they both held on to each other, even when their hearts were broken. The song ends on a beautiful note, reminding us to cherish the memories of our past and appreciate the journey that brought us to where we are now.

My grandma just passed away after being married to my grandfather for 59 years. Everytime she put this on, he would walk downstairs (bad back and all) and slow dance with her. Didn't matter if they were angry, he would drop everything to dance with her to this. I'm here to grieve her and keep her memory alive. She was my best friend.❤

Update: Grandpa has went up to join her and they are reunited 🪽
