I Only Want You For Christmas
Alan Jackson (Holiday) Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The snow is falling It's Christmas Eve
Presents are wrapped Under the tree
Is there one for me?

I only want you for Christmas, baby
I don't need nothing else
I only want you for Christmas, baby
Tie a ribbon 'round yourself
Oh, tie a ribbon 'round yourself

I ain't gonna write no letter Send north to the pole
Cause what I'm wanting this year Saint Nick don't need to know

I only want you for Christmas, baby
I don't need nothing else
I only want you for Christmas, baby
Tie a ribbon 'round yourself
Oh, tie a ribbon 'round yourself

So put on your Christmas stockings I'll find that mistletoe
Let's get into the the holiday spirits
And honey ho ho ho ho ho ho ho ho

I only want you for Christmas, baby
I don't need nothing else
I only want you for Christmas, baby
Tie a ribbon 'round yourself
I only want you for Christmas, baby
I don't need nothing else
I only want you for Christmas, baby
Tie a ribbon 'round yourself

Oh, tie a ribbon 'round yourself
Woo ooh (train noise)

Oh I had a bicycle
I had a train too

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Alan Jackson's "I Only Want You For Christmas" express a simple and sweet sentiment that is perfect for the holiday season. The setting is Christmas Eve, with snow falling and presents wrapped under the tree, but the singer is only interested in the one gift that truly matters: his lover. He sings, "I only want you for Christmas, baby / I don't need nothing else / Tie a ribbon 'round yourself."

The lyrics are all about focusing on what's truly important during the holiday season, which is the warmth and love of your significant other. Rather than getting bogged down in material possessions, the singer is content to spend the holiday with the person he loves. He even jokes that he won't send a letter to Santa Claus because Santa isn't capable of granting his one true wish.

Throughout the song, there are fun holiday references that add to the festive feel. The singer encourages his lover to put on Christmas stockings and suggests they search for mistletoe. He even adds a playful "ho ho ho ho ho" at one point. The final lines of the song, which include the sound of a train, seem to be a nod to childhood memories and the joy of receiving gifts at Christmas.
