The lyrics of Alan Menken's song "Prologo" tell the story of a young and handsome prince who lives in a splendid castle in the secret heart of France. Despite having everything one could desire, the prince is selfish and cruel, taxing the village to obtain the most beautiful things for his castle and inviting only the most beautiful people to his parties.
One night, a stranger arrives at the castle seeking shelter from a storm. She offers the prince a single rose as a gift. Disgusted by her miserable appearance, the prince dismisses her. However, she warns him not to be deceived by appearances because true beauty lies within the heart. Ignoring her advice once again, the prince's rejection causes the old woman's outward appearance to vanish, revealing a beautiful enchantress.
The prince begs her for forgiveness, but it is too late. She has seen that there is no love in his heart. To punish him, she transforms him into a hideous beast and casts a powerful spell on the castle and all who inhabit it. The prince and his servants are forgotten by the world as their memories are erased from the people they once loved. The rose given to him, however, is truly an enchanted rose. If he learns to love and is loved in return before the last petal falls, the spell will be broken. Otherwise, he remains a beast forever.
Over time, the prince falls into despair, losing all hope. Who could ever love a beast? This prologue sets the stage for the musical "Beauty and the Beast" and introduces the audience to the central conflict and theme of the story: the power of inner beauty and the transformative nature of love.
