Museum
Alana Henderson Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I've got some things make your picture complete 'cause
We shared a history, I'd gladly impart, so that she'd meet your hero
She'd know him
But she gets the learning of lessons I taught
And she gets the walking through gates that I wrought
And I've got the key to the museum of thought
That no one but us ever entered
She's got hearts in her eyes and they're making her blind
But I've got the tricks to read your mind
I know I could teach her and that might be kind
But I'll back off, she can find her own way
Because she gets the learning of lessons I taught
And if she gets the walking through gates that I wrought (I wrought)
Then, I've got the key to the museum of thought
That no one but us ever entered
That no one but us ever entered
And it's not to say it will work out the same
And it's not to say you can't make a new name
So, I will stay quiet, she'll feel her own pain
But I'll sing her my songs if you do it again
But she might get the learning of lessons I taught
And she might get the walking through gates that I wrought
So, I'll keep the key to the museum of thought
That no one but us ever entered
That no one but us ever entered
So, baby, talk and bear your soul
And your body, and the whole
Reason you go out there every day
Then slip in to slipping out of touch
And give in to not giving much
And move on to someone new
And forget she ever walked within you
And forget she ever walked within you
And I will just quietly curate this museum of thought
That no one but us ever entered
I will just quietly curate this museum of thought
That no one but us ever entered
In the song Museum, Alana Henderson addresses her ex-boyfriend who has moved on and found a new love, while she remains stuck in the past. She begins the song by acknowledging that he's found someone new, but she still holds memories and experiences that will give his new love a better understanding of him. She speaks of a "museum of thought" that only they have entered, and suggests that he and his new partner will never understand him in the same way as she does. She is possessive of the memories and experiences they shared and suggests that he won't have the same connection with his new love as he did with her. While it is obvious that she still cares for him, she knows that he's moved on and that she has to let him go.
The second verse reveals Alana's bitterness and jealousy toward the new woman. Although she knows she has much to teach her about him, and that their shared experiences would provide invaluable insight, she also recognizes that she must let her learn these lessons on her own. She sings that if the new woman does learn these lessons, then Alana alone holds the key to the museum of thought. The bridge suggests that Alana is aware that things may not work out with the new woman, and that her ex may yet return to her. She warns him not to take her for granted in the future if he does indeed come back. In the end, Alana concludes that she will continue to quietly curate this "museum of thought" where their memories reside, and reminds her ex that only they can ever enter it.

"But I'll sing her my songs if you do it again." is a Phoebe Bridgers baseball bat, and one of the best lyrics I've heard on the island this year.
