Hammers
Alec Benjamin Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It's wholly subjective
The thing that you see
So what's your objective?
What will it be?
With those nails and those wrenches
The tools in your hand
I just have one question
If hammers can build, if hammers can take
If hammers can make things, if hammers can
Break the ground that you walk upon
Break the ground that you're standin' on, standin' on
If hammers can crush, if hammers can bend
Then how do you plan to use your hammer, my friend?
Wield your hammer like weapons drawn, or
Wield your hammer to right what's wrong, right what's wrong, hm

Only time will show
Only time will show
Only time will show
Only time will show

We're not passin' judgment
'Cause that would be cruel
Use your words to bludgeon you
As if they were some tool
But with those nails and those wrenches
The tools in your hand
I just have one question

If hammers can build, if hammers can take
If hammers can make things, if hammers can
Break the ground that you walk upon
Break the ground that you're standin' on, standin' on
If hammers can crush, if hammers can bend
Then how do you plan to use your hammer, my friend?
Wield your hammer like weapons drawn, or
Wield your hammer to right what's wrong, right what's wrong, hm

Only time will show
Only time will show
Only time will show
Only time will show

If hammers can build, if hammers can take
If hammers can make things, if hammers can
Break the ground that you walk upon
Break the ground that you're standin' on, standin' on
If hammers can crush, if hammers can bend
Then how do you plan to use your hammer, my friend?
Wield your hammer like weapons drawn, or
Wield your hammer to right what's wrong, right what's wrong, hm

Only time will show
Only time will show

Only time will show
Only time will show, mm

Overall Meaning

In Alec Benjamin's song "Hammers," he explores the idea of the power of tools, specifically hammers, and how they can be used both to build and to destroy. He poses the question to the listener, "If hammers can build, if hammers can take, if hammers can make things, if hammers can break the ground that you walk upon...Then how do you plan to use your hammer, my friend?"

The lyrics carry a sense of introspection and awareness, as Benjamin encourages the listener to consider their own motives and intentions. He acknowledges that it's subjective and up to the individual to determine how they use their tools, but also hints at the potential consequences of wielding them with ill intent. The repetition of "Only time will show" at the end of each verse serves as a reminder that actions have consequences, and the true results of one's choices may not be immediately apparent.

Overall, "Hammers" is a thought-provoking commentary on the power we hold in our hands, and the responsibility that comes with it.

@crackers3978

Idk if the people here still want an explanation to the chorus, but for me it means:

To choose what you wanna become as a person using the "hammer" or, in my interpretation, our free will of making a decision.

You can choose to be kinder, or you can choose to be stricter.
You can choose to make more things that you can look forwards to, or you can choose to make things you won't look forward to.
You can choose to make amends, or you can choose to break the relationship.
And many more decisions.

It doesn't mean the latter is a bad choice. Sometimes it's better to break a relationship, to make things you don't look forwards to (like paying taxes lol), to be stricter.

It does mean, however, that it's your choice. This hammer is on your hands, so what will you choose to do? Only time will tell.
