Big Brother
Aleph Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I feel so shy I've never been here
The windows are broken and it's burning with cold
Darling I'm afraid the night is so long
The face of the man is

Losing my breath I'm losing my soul
Big brothers face is on behind every door
There's nothing to do
There's nowhere to hide
The shadows are black

Nineteen eighty-four too tired
Nineteen eighty-four to run run
Nineteen eighty-four I'm waiting
Nineteen eighty-four understand me

*BIG BROTHER
Tell me what to catch
Why me, I just don't understand
BIG BROTHER,
Just our tender love can't teach me how to go on

So many times in many ways
I treid to believe in big brother's day
I've lost all my hopes to switch off that screen
I don't see the future as the world then will be

*Repeat

BIG BROTHER (x2)
Just our tender love can't teach me how to go on

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Aleph's song Big Brother convey a sense of fear and hopelessness in the face of an oppressive and all-encompassing system. The opening lines depict a feeling of isolation and unfamiliarity with one's surroundings, communicating a sense of vulnerability. The use of contradictory elements, such as broken windows in a burning cold room, create a sense of disorientation and dissonance. The line "The face of the man is" leaves the listener hanging, emphasizing a lack of control or agency.

The chorus, with its repetition of "Big Brother," alludes to the concept of the panopticon, a model of prison in which every inmate can be observed at all times. This is further emphasized by the line "Big brother's face is on behind every door," which speaks to the pervasive nature of surveillance in modern society. The lack of agency and control is conveyed through the line "There's nothing to do, there's nowhere to hide," communicating a sense of defeat and hopelessness. The reference to George Orwell's novel "Nineteen Eighty-Four" underscores the dystopian tone of the song, and the final lines of the chorus "Just our tender love can't teach me how to go on" suggest a sense of despair in the face of an all-powerful system.

I love Aleph's sound and style of Italo-Eurobeat

You can notice it in other artist's music like Alphatown and Derek Simon

@JohnJohn-ss5vj

Isn't Derek Simon and Alphatown an alis for Aleph?

@DurninsSalvage

@John John Yes, Giancarlo Pasquini formed Aleph and was their lead vocalist, and recorded solo works under the alias Derek Simon as well as Dave Rodgers, as he's known today. All three are the same guy singing. He's also worked directly with Andrea Leonardi (Bratt Sinclaire). It's interesting how Eurobeat evolved almost directly from the same Italodisco artists with Eurodisco influence. Speaking of which, if you like Italodisco, Silent Circle is a great Eurodisco group out of Germany, Touch in the Night by them is an absolute banger.

@@JohnJohn-ss5vj Alphatown is Mauro Farina (Mark Farina not the DJ, F.C.F) . Aleph consists of Giancarlo Pasquini (Dave Rodgers, Derek Simon, The Big Brother, Patrick Hooley, Robert Stone, and other alias), Marco Manzi, Donato Belini
