Divorce
Alex Cameron Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well, in the age of conversation
I guess I got the gift of gab
But when you shine your spotlight on me
My little microphone turns to sand
And I've killed little baby rabbits
I've killed microscopic crabs
But I never killed a feeling
Like the one you and me had

Now, did you see where my love went?
Because it ain't here in my hand
You need to jet there, darling, between your legs
I couldn't bear another needy man

I got friends in Kansas City with a motherfucking futon couch
If that's how you want to play it
I'm drinking in the dark because my battery's all ran out
All you got to do is say it
Divorce

I could leave your ovulation
To meet Elon and his clan
With his batteries full of sunlight
And his cars that run on sand
And I go weak with constipation
From all the pills and the spam
Though we drink our Mother Energy
There ain't no women for the needy man

Oh, did you see where my love went?
Because it ain't here in my hand
You need to jet there, darling, between your legs
I couldn't bear another needy man

I got friends in Kansas City with a motherfucking futon couch
If that's how you want to play it
I'm drinking in the dark because my battery's all ran out
All you got to do is say it
Divorce, divorce, divorce

All you got to do is say it
Divorce, divorce, divorce

All you got to do is say it
Divorce

Overall Meaning

The song "Divorce" by Alex Cameron delves into the complexities of a failing relationship, where one partner feels neglected and abandoned. The opening lines of the song talk about how the singer excels in social situations, but when put under the spotlight of their partner, they falter. The singer has killed little creatures before but has never killed a feeling like the one he and his partner had.

As the song progresses, the singer asks his partner where their love went, stating that it's not in his hands anymore. He then tells her to leave and try finding someone else to take care of her needs, as he doesn't want to deal with another needy person. The lyrics express his disappointment and frustration with the relationship, which has reached its breaking point.

The chorus of the song has the singer repeating the word "Divorce" three times, emphasizing that this is what needs to happen to end the relationship.

Alex Cameron's "Divorce" is a sombre and truthful take on a relationship that's run its course. It's a challenging subject to write about, but the song's emotional honesty and raw lyrics make it a powerful expression of heartbreak and loss.

Do you like Alex Cameron ?

His early work was a little too new wave for my tastes, but when Forced Witness came out in '17 I think he really came into his own, commercially and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. He's been compared to Elvis Costello, but I think Cameron has a far more bitter, cynical sense of humor.

In '19, Cameron released this, Divorce, his most accomplished album. I think his undisputed masterpiece is "Marlon Brando", a song so catchy, most people probably don't listen to the lyrics. But they should, because it's not just about the pleasures of conformity, and the importance of trends, it's also a personal statement about the Cameron himself

Alex Cameron is making the most exciting, interesting music right now. It's unique pop music written from the perspective of oddball characters–yet still feels genuine and honest.
