(I don't wanna go back)
(Nobody's gonna push me off track, uh-huh)
(I don't wanna go back)
(Nobody's gonna push me off track, uh-huh)

It's calling me back
House of Sugar
Did they bury me here?
Daddy, don't let 'em put me down
Daddy, don't let 'em turn me around
Uh, uh

I don't wanna go back
Nobody's gonna push me off track, uh-huh
I see what they do
Good people got something to lose, uh-huh
I don't wanna go back (go back)
Nobody's gonna push me off track, uh-huh
I don't wanna be this (be this)
Good people gotta fight to exist, uh-huh
Uh-huh, uh-huh
Uh-huh

(I can see it right there, right in front of me)
(I can see it right there, right in front of me)
(I can see it right there, right in front of me)
(I can see it right there, right in front of me)
(I can see it right there, right in front of me)
(I can see it right there, right in front of me)
(I can see it right there, right in front of me)

(I don't wanna go back)
(Nobody's gonna push me off track, uh-huh)
(I don't wanna go back)

(Nobody's gonna push me off track, uh-huh)
(I don't wanna go back)

Overall Meaning

The song "Gretel" by musician Alex G has a strong theme of not wanting to go back to a difficult or oppressive situation. The lyrics imply that the singer has experienced some sort of hardship, possibly at the hands of others, and is determined not to let anyone push them off track. The repetition of the phrase "nobody's gonna push me off track" emphasizes this resolve.

The line "House of Sugar / Did they bury me here?" is open to interpretation, but it could suggest that the singer feels trapped or suffocated in their current surroundings. They address their father, asking him not to let them be put down or turned around by others. The phrase "good people got something to lose" adds another layer to the song's meaning, suggesting that there may be larger societal forces at play that make it difficult for some people to succeed or thrive.

The repeated line "I don't wanna go back" takes on a sense of urgency as the song progresses, with the addition of "good people gotta fight to exist" emphasizing the singer's determination not to allow anyone to hold them back. The repetition of the chorus and the repeated phrase "I can see it right there, right in front of me" suggest that the singer is visualizing a better future and is motivated by the hope of reaching it.

Best line in the song. Being a good person is a constant battle. If we allow every situation and gust of wind to compromise our values we will start exhibiting all the behaviors of toxic and harmful people before we know it. Happened to me over the course of 2 years during covid.
