My Mistakes Were Made For You

My mistakes were made for you
And in the back room of a bad dream, she came
And whisked me away, enthused
And it's solid as a rock rolling down a hill
The fact is that it probably will hit something
And were just following the flock, round
And the in between, before we smash to smithereens
Like they were, and we scrambled from the grain
And its the fame that put words in her mouth
She couldn't help, but spit em out
Innocence and arrogance intwined
In the filthiest of minds
She's was bitten on her birthday, and now
A face in the crowd, shes not
And i suspect that now, forever the shape
She came to escape, its forgot
And it's a lot to ask and not to sting1
Give her less than everything
Around your crooked conscious she will wind
Cos were just following the flock round
And the in-between
Before we smash to smithereens
Like they were, and we scramble from the grain
And it's the fame that put words in her mouth
She couldn't help, but spit em out
Around your crooked conscious she will wind
And it's a lot to ask and not to sting
Giver her less than everything
Innocence and arrogance intwined
The lyrics to Alex Turner's song My Mistakes Were Made For You are a reflection on a relationship that is not only flawed but is destined to fail. The first verse, "About as subtle as an earthquake, I know, My mistakes were made for you" highlights the singer's awareness that they are not subtle in their actions, and their mistakes have been made with the other person in mind. The second verse describes how the other person came into their life and swept them away, but the reality is that they are on a collision course with disaster. The imagery of something rolling down a hill, hitting something on the hazardous terrain, is a metaphor for this relationship.
The third verse presents the idea that both parties are following the crowd, not really thinking about the consequences of their actions until it's too late. The reference to being bitten on her birthday, and now a face in the crowd, implies that the other person has lost their individuality and has become just another person. They came into the relationship to escape, but that's been forgotten. The final lines of the verse reveal the dilemma in the relationship, "And it's a lot to ask and not to sting, Give her less than everything, Innocence and arrogance intertwined". The singer wants to give everything to the other person, but they also want to protect themselves from getting hurt.
Overall, My Mistakes Were Made For You is a powerful reflection on a relationship that is doomed to fail. The lyrics highlight the moments of recognition when the singer realizes their faults and how they contributed to the downfall of the relationship. They are aware that they are not subtle in their actions and that the other person is also responsible for their actions. The last lines of the song reveal the difficulty in ending a relationship, and the struggle to balance giving everything with protecting oneself.

About as subtle as an earthquake, I know
I am aware that I am not subtle at all
My mistakes were made for you
I made mistakes because of you
And in the back room of a bad dream, she came
She appeared in a nightmare
And whisked me away, enthused
She took me away excitedly
And it's solid as a rock rolling down a hill
It is inevitable that something bad will happen
The fact is that it probably will hit something
Something will get hurt in the process
On the hazardous terrain
In a dangerous area
And were just following the flock, round
We are just going along with the crowd
And the in between, before we smash to smithereens
Before we completely fall apart
Like they were, and we scrambled from the grain
Like others have done before, we try to avoid getting hurt
And its the fame that put words in her mouth
She spoke because of the attention she received
She couldn't help, but spit em out
She couldn't control what she said
Innocence and arrogance intwined
Both naivety and cockiness are common features
She's was bitten on her birthday, and now
She had a bad experience on her special day
A face in the crowd, shes not
She is not recognizable anymore
And i suspect that now, forever the shape
I believe that she will always be affected
She came to escape, its forgot
She tried to escape something, but it was forgotten
And it's a lot to ask and not to sting
It is difficult to not feel hurt
Give her less than everything
Do not give her anything less than what she deserves
Around your crooked conscious she will wind
She will manipulate your guilty conscience
Cos were just following the flock round
Because we are just going along with the crowd
And the in-between
The grey area
Before we smash to smithereens
Before we completely fall apart
It's the fame that put words in her mouth
She spoke because of the attention she received
She couldn't help, but spit em out
She couldn't control what she said
Around your crooked conscious she will wind
She will manipulate your guilty conscience
And it's a lot to ask and not to sting
It is difficult to not feel hurt
Giver her less than everything
Do not give her anything less than what she deserves
Innocence and arrogance intwined
Both naivety and cockiness are common features

This song always makes me think about how much Miles and Alex could totally nail a 007 movie intro song
@KrishtiBhattacharjee

I’ve always thought that when this album came out. Saddened that it will never happen and was so bummed they never toured here in Canada when they’re first album came out
@sarahkanj2084
been saying this forever!! glad I'm not the only one to see it
@Skydrag.V60
10000% everything they make is gold and I’d love to see them bring in the new era of Bond with a song as suave as this
@Sean0780
They really seem to nail that mid century foreign film (pardon my US American perspective) score/soundtrack feeling to the wall. I love music like this. Definite 007 or other spy movie (biting off of Bond movies) worthy stuff.
