Who is she?
Alice Jemima is a 19 year old singer songwriter from Newton Abbot, Devon. Her songs are carefully crafted slices of pop. She plays a vintage Hofner guitar and sings with a voice that is both fragile and rich…
Where’s she been seen?
2011 saw Alice Jemima performing at a couple of high profile gigs, including the unveiling of the Olympic Rings at St Pancras International (where she played to the likes of Seb Coe and Boris Johnson).
She was selected from hundreds for a spot on the BBC introducing stage at Wychwood Festival where Elisa Bray (Independent Newspaper) declared Alice to be ‘first and top of my list’. And chosen by BBC Introducing Bristol to ‘demonstrate the terrifically high standard and variety of music in the local area’ by playing at the BBC’s first live gig in Bristol.
Her next gig will be on January 11th 2012 at the Proud Galleries in Camden for Music Week.
Where’s she been heard?
Radio 1’s Rob da Bank played Alice Jemima, and later in the year, Tom Robinson at Radio 6 courtesy of Breaking More Waves Blog who lined Alice Jemima up alongside the likes of Rizzle Kicks, Curxes and made her the lead choice of song with ‘Red Coat’, produced in the studio of Grammy nominated producer Andy Chatterley and Jason Tarver, both of whom worked with Kylie Minogue on her album Aphrodite.
BBC Bristol have been heralding Alice Jemima since her win at Teenage Rampage, Exeter in 2010, and she is a regular on their BBC introducing slot.
Who knows about her?
Fans of Alice Jemima include Rob da Bank, who played her music on Radio 1 before she became a regular fixture in his week courtesy of his ‘A Song In Seven Hours Competition’, which she won with a song written for him entitled ‘Psychedelic Bacon’, taking her to his festival on the Isle of Wight. Other fans include Nerina Pallot who selected Alice Jemima to play support for her in 2009 and more recently (December 2011) to perform alongside her in a duet.
Hofner have been quick to latch onto Alice Jemima, providing her with guitars to play, and adding her to their portfolio of Hofner Artists alongside the others such as Mick Box, Paul McCartney and Chris Rea.
Sounds a bit like…?
Similarities between Alice Jemima and other artists such as Emiliana Torrini, Lisa Mitchell, Nina Persson and Alessi Laurent-Marke have all been made.
In short
‘…gloriously magical and innocent pop, where the verse, chorus and middle eight all seem as sweetly hooky as each other…’ Breaking More Waves Blog.
Tiger
Alice Jemima Lyrics

Something so bittersweet
A storm has gone over
Now we're building something concrete
Lucky you
With eyes like that
Lucky, oh my
Like a tiger
Move like fire
Run to you, run to you
I'm a fighter for desire
Fight for you
Is this the start of something?
Something that'll make me weak
Or make me stronger
Darling this is all me
Lucky you
With a mind like that
Lucky, oh my
You set my soul on fire
Like a tiger
Move like fire
Run to you, run to you
I'm a fighter for desire
Fight for you
Like a tiger
Move like fire
Run to you, run to you
I'm a fighter for desire
Fight for you
The lyrics of Alice Jemima's song, "Tiger," appear to speak of a relationship and whether or not it is the beginning of something new, something bittersweet. The imagery of a storm passing over and building something concrete suggests the possibility that this relationship could be something strong and lasting. The first two verses are spoken from the perspective of the singer to a lucky person with eyes and a mind that she finds attractive. The chorus and third verse explore the idea of the passionate nature of the relationship with the singer comparing herself to a tiger, moving with fire, and fighting for her desire to be with this person. These lyrics seem to capture the excitement and uncertainty that often come with the beginning of a relationship and the desire to fight and work to make it last.
One possible interpretation of these lyrics is that they are about a romantic relationship, an ex in particular. The lyrics suggest that the singer is excited about the possibility of rekindling the relationship, but there is some hesitation as she wonders if this could make her weaker or stronger. There is a sense of longing for this person, and the chorus speaks of fighting for desire and passion. While the verses suggest a desire for this person's mind and looks, there is also a deeper sense of connection and possibly even love as the lyrics describe the person setting her heart and soul on fire.
