She is the daughte… Read Full Bio ↴Alice Russell (b. 1975) is a British soul singer.
She is the daughter of an organist, and grew up in Framlingham in Suffolk. At the age of nine, following in her father's and sisters' musical footsteps, Russell began taking lessons on cello, and sang in choirs, before studying art and music in Brighton from 1994.
As well as the classical influences of her father, and formal music lessons, Russell listened to gospel music and soul artists such as Stevie Wonder and Aretha Franklin from an early age, which played a big part in the shaping of her style. Other artists such as Minnie Ripperton, Eva Cassidy, Chaka Khan, and Jill Scott are listed by Russell as influences.
She began making a name for herself in the early 2000s, contributing to recordings by Bah Samba, Quantic, TM Juke, Kushti and Nostalgia 77. Her work with Bah Samba sees Russell fusing Latin sounds with tinges of house, jazz and funk, whereas her material with the band Kushti involved a more laid back, hip-hop and soul inspired sound. Her debut album, Under the Munka Moon (2004), was an amalgamation of various singles, remixes, and collaborations.
It was followed by My Favourite Letters in 2005, her debut studio album, created in collaboration with co-writer, producer, and guitarist Alex Cowan (a.k.a. TM Juke). Her third release, Under the Munka Moon II (2006), compiled her most recent collaborations, remixes, and cover versions, including her popular interpretation of The White Stripes' Seven Nation Army. The Alice Russell – Live in Paris DVD also came out in 2006.
Russell and TM Juke have been touring together since 2006 in the U.K, Europe, Australia, the U.S., and other countries. In summer 2006, Grant Marshall (a.k.a. Daddy G of Massive Attack) asked Russell to play the main stage at The Big Chill music festival. Russell has also supported Lonnie Liston Smith, Femi Kuti and De La Soul, and has appeared on the bill with Amy Winehouse for the British showcase at the Midem Music Conference in Cannes 2007.

Stones to pebbles, see them roll away.
My wandering troubles need not break my back,
Mmm, sorrow is the price I pay.
I sing my sorrows to the morning; I speak them to the night.
You best believe I? ll keep singing until I make my wrongs so right.
Devil said, a pity for your troubles to take your tired old soul?
So you know you got to go.
You got to hurry on now,
In the night.
I would heed my sorrow.
And it knows, won? t be long now?
Hurry.
Now with blind hands, I crawl this lonely place,
As my dry tears fall and roll away.
I can? t see troubles as they dance behind my back,
Ooo, sorrow is my soul to slay.
He stole my sorrows from the morning; he ripped them from the night.
And you best believe I? ll keep singing to make my wrongs so right.
Devil took a pity of my troubles; he holds my tired old soul
So I know I got to go?
Hurry, to catch the morning.
I got to hurry on now,
In the night.
I would heed my sorrow.
Now I know, won? t be long now?
Hurry.
The lyrics of "Hurry On" by Alice Russell Feat. TM Juke tell a story of a person who has faced a lot of troubles in their life, and now they are on the verge of giving up. The singer in the song feels the weight of their problems on their back, but they refuse to let it break them. They sing their sorrows in the morning and speak them in the night, determined to make their wrongs right. The devil offers the singer a way out, but they know they must keep going, they must hurry to catch the morning.
The chorus of the song is particularly powerful, as it urges the listener to keep persisting despite the obstacles in their way. The lines "You got to hurry on now, In the night. I would heed my sorrow. And it knows, won't be long now? Hurry" show the urgency of the situation and the need to keep moving forward.
The second verse symbolizes the difficulties that the singer faces as they navigate through life. The hand metaphor implies a sense of helplessness and the dry tears represent a lack of emotion. The troubles that the singer faces dance behind their back because they can't see them. However, the sorrow that the singer feels has awakened their soul, and they know that they must persevere to overcome their obstacles.
Overall, "Hurry On" is an inspiring song that encourages listeners to keep going despite the troubles they face. The power of the lyrics lies in the fact that they resonate with anyone who has ever felt like giving up.
