Chemical Addiction
Alice in Chains Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I was only 15, standout on the Ave.
You're chasing a bad dream, a luxury I never had
Living my life in the box, or sleepin in the trash
Taking girls for the things I need, like booze, drugs and ass
Get stoned, daily survival in the war zone
Yeah our teens meant everything, alright
Half rack, smoking out till it's all black
Death trap, watch me going blind, oh
I don't care what you say, I
Or what you do
Chemical addiction is
Getting rid of you
So high, colors turn to sound
Goodbye, let us in and we'll lay you in the ground
Chosen on the floor, take another drag
Bought a bunch of valiums from skinny broadway bag
I don't know much about heroin but I, I wanna try
Just about everything once before I die
Get stoned, daily survival in the war zone
Yeah our teens meant everything, alright
Half rack, smoking out till it's all black
Death trap, watch me going blind, oh
I don't care what you say, I
Or what you do
Chemical addiction is
Getting rid of you
So high, colors turn to sound
Goodbye, let us in and we'll lay you in the ground
Now Jerry do me like this...
Get stoned, daily survival in the war zone
Yeah our teens meant everything, alright

Half rack, smoking out till it's all black
Death trap, watch me going blind, oh

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Alice in Chains's song Chemical Addiction depict a dark and harrowing journey of addiction, desperation, and self-destruction. At the age of 15, the singer is already living a life of poverty and deprivation, taking advantage of girls and turning to drugs and alcohol to escape his harsh reality. The lyrics paint a picture of a war zone, where getting high and surviving are the only things that matter. The line "I don't care what you say, or what you do, Chemical addiction is getting rid of you" highlights the destructive power of addiction, and how it can consume and destroy a person's life, leaving them with nothing.

The reference to heroin in the lyrics, "I don't know much about heroin but I, I wanna try, just about everything once before I die" is particularly poignant, as it highlights the all-consuming nature of addiction. The character has no knowledge or experience of heroin, but still wants to try it as a way of escaping his bleak reality. The final lines of the song, "Goodbye, let us in and we'll lay you in the ground" further highlight the devastating consequences of addiction and the inevitability of death.

I remember seeing an interview where Jerry said this was the song where they found out their identity and where they wanted to go with the band.

@renatop2069

Yep. It's surprising this one didn't make the cut onto Facelift.

@buckplug2423

It's a pretty rare song, there's only 1 way to listen to it - on "Sweet Alice" and "Treehouse Tapes" demos. There are no recordings of live version or any EP versions.

Blader just bought a copy of Sweet Alice for $48
