Heaven Behind You
Alice in Chains Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Be what you want to be
See what you came to see
Been what you want to be
I don't like what I see

Like the coldest winter chill
Heaven beside you, hell within
Like the coldest winter chill
Heaven beside you, hell within
Like the coldest winter will
Heaven beside you, hell within
And you think you have it still, heaven inside you

So there's problems in your life
That's fucked up, and I'm not blind
I'm just see through faded, super jaded
Out of my mind

Do what you want to do
Go out and seek your truth
When I'm down and blue
Rather be me than you

Like the coldest winter chill
Heaven beside you, hell within
Like the coldest winter chill
Heaven beside you, hell within
Like the coldest winter will
Heaven beside you, hell within
And you wish you had it still, heaven inside you

So there's problems in your life
That's fucked up, and I'm not blind
I'm just see through faded, super jaded
Out of my mind

Like the coldest winter chill
Heaven beside you, hell within
Like the coldest winter chill
Heaven beside you, hell within
Like the coldest winter will
Heaven beside you, hell within
And you know you have it still, heaven inside you

So there's problems in your life
That's fucked up, but you're not blind

You're just see through faded, overrated
Out of your mind

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Alice in Chains' song "Heaven Beside You" express the theme of internal contrast. The singer acknowledges that while heaven can exist alongside a person, they can simultaneously be experiencing internal turmoil that feels like hell. The recurrent line "Like the coldest winter chill, heaven beside you, hell within" evokes vivid imagery of two contrasting experiences intertwined. The singer urges the listener to be authentic to themselves and do what they want to do, but simultaneously acknowledges that there may be problems in their life that are difficult to see past.

The song is a sonically and lyrically captivating exploration of the tension between good and evil that can exist within one person. The repetitive nature of the chorus hammers home the theme of duality, while the verses poignantly express the struggle to reconcile one's internal conflicts. It's a hauntingly beautiful and introspective piece that leaves an indelible mark on the listener.

I saw an interview once where Jerry said that Layne always encouraged him to sing more. He gave Jerry the encouragement to be out there more. Their harmonies are one of the things I loved about Alice In Chains.

@henriquesilvestre4078

I heard they hired awful singers so Layne could step up and be him singing!

@Jerry Cantrell What? Are you impersonating Jerry Cantrell to slide into comments of Alice in Chains fans? I'm not even mad. Nice
