This Time The Dream's On Me
Alison Krauss Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Somewhere, someday we'll be close together
Wait and see
Oh, by the way
This time the dream's on me

You'll take my hand
And you'll look at me adoringly
But as things stand
This time the dream's on me

It would be fun
To be certain that I'm the one
To know that I, at least
Supply the shoulder you cry upon

To see you through
Till you're everything you want to be
It can't be true but
This time the dream's on me

It would be fun
To be certain that I'm the one
To know that I, at least
Supply the shoulder you cry upon

To see you through
Till you're everything you want to be

It can't be true but
This time the dream's on me

Overall Meaning

Alison Krauss's song 'This Time The Dream's On Me' is a touching and romantic ballad about the unfulfilled love that the singer shares with someone she longs to be with. The song starts with an expression of hope - the hope that someday the two lovers will be together. The lyrics "Somewhere, someday we'll be close together, Wait and see" set the tone for the rest of the song. The singer then expresses her feelings towards this person - the longing to be close to them and to take their hand. The lines "You'll take my hand, And you'll look at me adoringly" convey a sense of intimacy and affection that the singer yearns for.

The song then takes a somber turn as the singer realizes that she cannot be with this person at the moment. The line "But as things stand, this time the dream's on me" portrays her disappointment and heartache. She wishes to be the one who supports and comforts the person she loves but realizes that this can only be a distant dream. Nonetheless, the singer remains hopeful that someday her dream will come true.

In the final verses, the singer reiterates her desire to be a source of strength and support to the person she loves. She wants to see them become everything they want to be and vows to see them through their ups and downs. However, the singer realizes that this may be an impossible dream. The final line, "It can't be true but, This time the dream's on me" is a bittersweet reminder of her love for this person and her hopes for their future together.

I really wish that Allison Krauss would do more Jazz & less country!!! She just has such a soulful voice as evident here, the best dam rendition of this Johnny Mercer classic!!! I wish she would do more music just like this :)

@DragonHeart613 You should check out Ella Fitzgerald's version of this ballad if you love Allison's take here! But though Ella's the queen of jazz, Allison does make her run for her money via this recording
