The ending of Alyx really breaks the setting in a painful way. Valve has retconned something. G man can move in four dimensions now. This is bigger than big, this is the difference between a three-dimensional child ripping a two dimensional monster in half with a flick of the wrist. Somehow a third-dimensional group such as the Combine could trap a fourth-dimensional creature such as G-man, which means the Combine are able to travel through time as well... Which means there's no logical reason for the humans in the plot to have any real chance of success without throwing a big pile of Vortigaunts into the story to act as some sort of "time travel armor."

tl;dr Alyx introduces massive power creep into the setting, and I think it's destabilizing the plot.

1) First game: Alien invasion, go to stop the big bad.
2) Second game: Alien empire with essentially infinite resources, get creative.
3) Third* game: Time travel, rewrite ending of second game.

I can't help but imagine there will be a bigger fish involved in 4.

@SubWaySpiderman lmao ok keep giving valve extensive benefit of the doubt, without viewing them as the monolithic corporation they have become. It's not the same valve that made the original half life games. They only do anything if they think it will sell hardware they have a huge stake in, or if it will be a multiplayer game they can put microtransactions in. No use taking tons of resources, time, etc... to make a single player game that will, regardless of its success, not make them nearly as much cash as game distribution, selling niche hardware, or producing multiplayer games with very little care for the artistic aspect of game development.

@Yagi it’s because the game as a whole is a simulation and the whole point of the game was to change the future and create a new dimension. For all you know the world is inhabitable and the g man and his employers found a way to create a simulation that feels no different from reality but has endless possibilities. It actually eerily applies to simulation theory in a way most people didn’t notice or care about back then.

I love how uncanny he is in Alyx. His slightly over-done expressions, the way his eyes don't quite line up sometimes, the stiff manner in which he walks, the way he speaks like he's not quite used to breathing between sentences, it's like an alien inhabiting a human body.

This is confusing if you haven't played vr. But if you're looking at vr footage but you're not wearing a headset, you're only seeing 1 eye. What makes Gman so uncanny in this game, to me at least, is that he looks into both of your eyes at the same time.

I love that as soon as G-Man's containment is breached, he's warping reality and sending out dozens of copies of himself to attend to different matters. I'd love to see how the Combine was able to capture him in the first place.

Best i can tell the only reason gman did this is because gordon wouldn't cooperate and there was something a special human player was required for so gman decided to try somebody else.

For all we know every aspect of the entire story so far has been the result of time manipulation and do overs to find the best outcome and Gordon and the player are entirely unaware of it.

I do agree it can make it incomprehensible to dumbos but that should not be the target audience of a half life game.

@sauercrowder A sequel to Ep2/Alyx will come. The ending of Alyx showed us that Valve wasn’t happy with the direction the story was headed and wanted to change the storyline in a reasonable manner. Episode Three was likely cancelled for this reason. The ending also indirectly confirmed a sequel to the series. That said, any sequel they release still isn’t going to answer all of our questions. It will expand the series and answer some questions, but it will open many more. G-Man will still remain a mysterious figure, and probably for the better. I think Half-Life has its reputation because of the simple fact that there is so much mystery and no concrete ending to it. If they were to end it with a finale then a lot of people wouldn’t be very happy with the conclusion and it would tarnish its reputation. Also keep in mind that Half-Life is merely a tech demo with a storyline for Valve. They don’t release HL games for the sake of releasing games, they release them to show off revolutionary technology. That’s my theory as to why the episodic model was scrapped. They wanted to keep Half-Life as a way to change the gaming industry, but it was quickly becoming your typical video game series with yearly releases.

I think the whole thing is just a massive fourth wall break. Freeman wasn't needed again until another game was released, so he was literally put in stasis until such a time. Same with Alyx at the end. Notice this exclusively happens to playable characters in these games. I honestly think this is what Valve was trying to get at. Gman is like the middle man between our real world and the game world, with the employers being the players of the game.

@Alexander Solamente translations and adaptations often ruin tone, inflections, small details not to mention inaccuracies in translation, including intentional ones. I don't mean half-life in particular, but translations/adaptations in general. If you can, you ABSOLUTELY have to have the original for the best experience. Exceptions are too rare to consider.

Some people think Valve ret-conned the ending of HL2 in Alyx. People say the G Man's time traveling/manipulating abilities were shoehorned in Alyx -- I strongly disagree. These abilities were heavily foreshadowed in HL2 -- just look at how much emphasis and the frequency in which he uses the word "time" in HL2.

G Man is supposed to be the developers of the game talking to the player but covered up with this character. The devs know the overall story and so does the Gman. Gman's employers are Valve. It's a really cool way of creating a story and linking it with real life. Valve and Half Life truly deserve the praise they get. Amazing work.

That “Doctor Freemaaaannnn” still sends tingles up my spine. I remember playing these games on my friends Xbox 360 as a teenager and laughing to keep myself sane at how horrifying this presence was. I had just read 1984, these games and that book are intertwined for me. In my own head cannon they take place in the same universe. I loved how much this guy gave me such a primal horror.

What I loved so much in the HL:A ending is the Combine Advisor momentarily became aware of Alyx before G-Man stopped time again after reversing it to the moment before Eli is killed. Such a little detail that adds a huge amount to the whole franchise. Stopping G-Man is possibly exactly why the Combine invaded Earth in the first place - maybe G-Man is part of a rival faction that opposes the Combine. The Combine themselves may have assumed Gordon was the only threat to G-Man's "cage" and therefore took him to the past where Gordon couldn't interfere. G-Man foresaw he was soon be imprisoned by the Combine and this is why he 'plucked' Alyx from Black Mesa before it was destroyed, as a contingency.

I like how the only time G-man seems to divulge any info is when AlYx saves him. When he talked with Gordon, he always seemed to be keeping his cards close to his chest. Alyx saving him made him feel a little more “generous” if even for a singular moment. He quickly uses Alyx saving him as a way to get something more out of the situation. Almost like he sees it as an exchange and once he helps save her father, he goes back to using her again.

God. Damn. Mike Shapiro work as the gman is fucking nuts. Probably one of my favorite character in video games just because of how interesting his personality, or lack there of, is. Everything he says has a purpose and a meaning behind it. No unnecessary exposition, but never straight to the point. Always making you think of what’s going on behind the scenes of half life.

I've always interpreted the GMan as someone who is frustrated with typical corporate bureaucracy. We don't know who his "employers" are, but he doesn't always listen to them and seems to delight in meddling with certain key individuals in the Half Life universe against the wishes of his higher ups. That is freaky. I feel as though his employers - though not entirely benevolent - maybe have lines they don't cross so as not to mess with all of time and space. And here is the G Man doing just that, pushing the boundaries of what he's allowed to do to people. Causing "Unforeseen Consequences". Against his employers' wishes, he saves Alyx Vance from the rubble of Black Mesa, purely because he has a vested interest in her. Then he puts her on the market once he is able to convince whoever "they" are that she's worthwhile and suddenly he's getting "offers." Chills, man. Chills.

That small repayment being Alyx as Gordon's replacement. By leading Alyx to White Forest, Gordon prompted the "exchange" to inevitably occur, which means this bastard is operating in all dimensions of time at once.

@Wveth Just imagine if HL2 development hadn't been royally fd up from that hack. They had been working on flame destruction for the environments and some other really cool things, but had to ditch them to meet the deadline.

The water physics and such were wayyyy advanced for the time though and it took other developers quite awhile to catch up. I still remember the elemental sprite tech demo like it was yesterday. Really cool stuff.

Let me throw out my crackpot theory I've had for a while, Gman talks about nudging things in a certain direction and we are led to believe he does that with other people, let them do the dirty work. But what if Gmans action are in itself a "nudge", everything he says and does is it give everyone else an understanding of what we think he is. He made Freeman believe Vortigaunt energy can contain him, he let the combine "Contain" him. Hes making them believe he has limits. Using Alyx and Freeman as more of distractions than vital chess pieces in his whole game, giving Gman the chance to pull off what he wants too

@Alex 5432 I haven't played the game for the same reasons, and knowing that I won't be able to do it anyway, and with no care in the world, I just watched the full game on first chance I got. If you don't mind spoilers, here it is:
it's at the end of the game, Alyx reaches the Vault where Combine supposedly hold their weapon, presumably Gordon Freeman in stasis, but when Alyx disables the containment in the Vault, it's revealed that the G-Man is there. He offers her to work for him in exchange for releasing him, and uses Alyx in the future, namely after the end of EP2, as a contingency plan now that Gordon is no longer under his influcence thanks to the vortigaunts.
So, although it's not stated directly, like most of the things that happen throughout Half-Life, especially when it comes to the G-Man, it is pretty obvious that the whole plot with Combine containing the G-Man in a "prison" was staged by the G-Man himself in order to go under the radar and reach Alyx in the past, rather than during the mainline story where she and Gordon were being looked over by vorts. The part about G-man being held prisoner by the Combine is, in fact, shown, you go through the prison in the final section of the game, and you overhear Combine talking about the G-Man being contained for the time being, even as they do not realize that G-man allowed them to imprison him specifically so that Alyx would meet him
the Combine are not in on G-Man's plans, they genuinely believe that they got him locked up, and still are scared shitless that he could escape at any moment, they fear him but think that they got him under control, by which I mean that they manage to make him not do anything, rather than using him to their own devices, which they can not do and do not dare to try at all

The G-man has to be one of my favorite video game characters of all time. He's so uniquely disturbing and truly alien in the way he speaks and acts, but also completely hypnotic and captivating. Anytime he's on screen, you feel your skin crawl, but you can't look away. I don't think I've seen any other character quite like him.

The G-Man is a perfect example of how having a good voice isn't the only thing you need when wanting to make an iconic voice, you also need to understand the way in which they talk. Their stutters, their pauses, their um's and ah's, the scenario in which they talk, and even their breaths. The G-Man stutters, pauses, and has weird tone a lot, and that adds mystery to his character, causing to player to wonder who, or what, he is.

I think it feels powerful because Freeman is just so powerful and so important for the rebellion, such a strong enemy of the combine that could change the combine from being the winning side to the losing one, and yet, the G-Man could make him disappear in a second just like he did with Sheppard

Definitely one of, if not my most, favorite video game characters. He’s basically channels the same energy as the Cheshire Cat and Q, but he’s more professional and wears a business suit. Michael Shapiro also gives him a delightfully sinister voice. I feel like G-man would become significantly less interesting if we knew who he was, but it’s fun to speculate whether he is a omnipotent trans-dimensional alien or just a physicist who had a few more “successful” experiments than Dr. Freeman.

My favorite thing about the G Man is in Half Life 2, when the Vortigaunts are messing with him and he goes "We'll see about that", it's the only time when he seems to show any kind of emotions, so the fact that this pissed him off that much is pretty cool

I love his manner of speaking. It's like an alien trying to emulate human speech. Seeing the G-Man in VR was unreal. Being able to see this ominous being with 3-dimensional depth was a bit unnerving. At times, as he walks around you, you feel like you could reach out and touch him. The speakers in the headset even had directional audio, so you could hear his voice behind you as we walked from your right to your left.

I’ve always felt strangely safe and at ease with him throughout the games as well, less like I’m being stalked and more like I’m being watched over, like I’m never truly alone because he’s always just beyond the veil of reality, with me every step of the way. It’s gotten to a point where he’s a comfort character to me, and that when he gets chased off in episode 1 I really want to just tell the Vorts “No, he’s a friend!”. I know there’s a lot of talk in the fandom about how he’s going to become an outright villain in the next games, but I just cannot bring myself to see him as anything other than a benevolent but misunderstood being.

I simply can't find words to describe how interesting G-Man's character is.
He's a videogame antagonist like no other, if you can even call him an antagonist.
The way he talks is like he's unfamiliar with everything is sort of creepy in a strange way. "You've.. done a.. great deal, in a small time... span.."
If they replaced his voice actor, his strange, creepy personality just wouldn't convey the same way.

Honestly, in my opinion, the G-Man is such an iconic and incredible character that there will never be another character as good as him when it comes to the kind of antagonist he is.
The way he appears, the way he talks, what he actually does, everything about him is both incredibly mysterious and absolutely terrifying.
Again, in my opinion, he is simply the best example of the mysterious otherworldly being whose motives are completely beyond our comprehension.

I feel like when we see multiples of him, those are "alternate universe" versions of him, exploring timelines and seeing what can be "nudged." This is evidenced when she asks about getting the combine off earth, and he makes a duplicate that seems to go nowhere before saying it was too large or a nudge
