Stormy Monday
Allman Brothers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

They call it stormy Monday
But Tuesday's just as bad
They call it stormy Monday
But Tuesday's just as bad
Lord, and Wednesday's worse
And Thursday's all so bad

The eagle flies on Friday
Saturday I go out to play
The eagle flies on Friday
Saturday I go out to play
Sunday I go to church, yeah
Gonna kneel down and pray

Lord have mercy
Lord have mercy on me
Lord have mercy
Lord have mercy on me
Though I'm tryin' and tryin' to find my baby
Won't somebody please send 'er home

Oh ho
Lord have mercy
Lord have mercy on me
Yeah, I'm proud, Lord have mercy
Lord have mercy on me

Though I'm tryin', tryin' to find my baby
Won't send 'er home, yeah, oh baby

Overall Meaning

The Allman Brothers Band's song "Stormy Monday" paints a picture of a never-ending cycle of hardship and despair. The song's opening lines repeat the phrase "They call it stormy Monday, but Tuesday's just as bad," revealing the characters' worldview that life is a continuous series of struggles with no respite. The following lines further underscore this feeling, as each day of the week is characterized as being worse than the one before it. The only glimmer of hope comes on Sunday, when the singer attends church and prays for salvation.

My Father was there as well. Still have the pics he took and some autographs. Fast forward to May 12, 2005, I was 29 years old. I was in a band that opened for the Bros. at Verizon Wireless Music Center(Oak Mtn). We were nobodys that just toured and played, but it was one of the greatest moments of my life and my fathers. To see his son share the stage with some of the original Bros., all meet backstage, bring those pics and old autographs for them to see, and just see the feelings and emotions on their faces when they saw all of it. Greg was so emotional about the whole situation. It was awsome.

This is the best live album of all time. The Allman's were the best R&R to ever come out of America !

I've been a guitar player for close to 55 years and I've played with some great players and I like to think of myself as a strong player as well, but never have I ever heard two guitar players work in such perfect synchronicity as Skydog and Dickey Betts. They had such musical empathy and understanding for one another and never did the legendary guitar ego get in the way of these two and that was what was such a beautiful thing. The Allman Brothers at the Fillmore East I read years ago was voted as the best live album of all time and I would have to agree 100%!

No comparison between Duane and Dickey...IMO!! Not even‼️
