1) American indie rock band currently signed to Polyvinyl Record Company. The four members of Aloha are scattered across the eastern half of the country, but spend most of their time making music together. Some Echoes is the second Aloha album since T.J. Lipple joined the band, and was recorded, mixed and mastered at Silver Sonya, the studio he runs with Chad Clark (Beauty Pill) in Arlington, Va.
Tony Cavallario and T.J. began playing together during a lull in Aloha's schedule in late 2002, when they both lived in Pittsburgh. T.J. joined the band in May of 2003, when Cale Parks, Tony and Matthew Gengler joined him at his grandpa's empty house in Altoona, PA. There they began writing 2004's Here Comes Everyone though at the time they didn't know it. With T.J. came a more focused approach to making music and a host of new tools including marimba, homemade mellotrons, organs and tape manipulations. T.J.'s skilled drumming also allowed Cale to move to the piano on occasion.
Aloha began with Tony and Matthew in the summer of 1997 in Bowling Green, OH, USA along with Eric Koltnow and Anthony Buehrer. Their first release, a self-titled and self-released 7" in an addition of 330 was delayed and issued sporadically when the artist hired to due the intaglio accompanying the record couldn't produce them to speed. One of the few bands to ever actually get a record deal based on a demo tape, the band spent time based out of Cleveland. In recent years, Aloha has operated from a number of bases, doing their writing, rehearsing and living in Chicago, Washington D.C., Cleveland, Cincinnati, Rochester, Pittsburgh and Altoona. Extensive touring has made Aloha renowned for their intense, non-stop live shows as well as their homemade T-shirts and self-reliant ethic. They have shared the stage the likes of Q and Not U, Ted Leo, Clinic, as well as Cex and Joan of Arc, two bands in which Cale Parks has been a member (including White Williams).

We Get Down
Aloha Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
You're the one in the burning house.
We get down to the basement where the music they are making, accompanies the chasing.
We're the ones in the burning house.
Not a fire, a light that surrounds the sort of heat when something's begun.
Before this I felt with no one.
We get down to a sunrise, when all the air has passed from your lungs into mine.
We get up and get angry when the light comes early but misses us entirely.
Can we stretch the nights of our lives into a shade that softens the light?
As the moon is ate by the sun.
Before this I saw with no one.
If I could, I'd make up a world as foggy as I feel, and tender as a nerve.
The glass of our heads, upon which we stood, and said if I could I'd break these doubting words in your head
I would break this doubting world from our head.
If I could, I would tear this love from no one.
The lyrics of Aloha's "We Get Down" convey various images related to human connections, disconnections, and human struggles. The song seems to start with the persona describing the anxiety of being on a highway and feeling the pressure to keep moving on. They seem to be on a mission, and someone is urging them to move quickly. The line "You're the one in the burning house" symbolizes the struggles of the person waiting for their arrival; they are anxious, trapped, and overwhelmed by the situation.
As the song progresses, the singer and the person in distress find their way to the basement where they hear music, probably a metaphorical representation of hope or a new beginning. However, they are still trapped in their situation, and the music only serves to accompany the chasing, emphasizing the futility of their situation. The phrase "We're the ones in the burning house" re-emphasizes their shared predicament.
Moving on, the song depicts a shift in their situation, as the night wanes and the sun rises, creating an opportunity for a fresh start. However, even with the new day comes anger and dissatisfaction, as life passes them by, missing them entirely. The persona seems to plead to slow down time, to stretch the nights of their lives, softening the light, perhaps to enjoy their moments of being together.
In the last section of the song, the persona expresses a desire to break free from doubt, to create a world as tender as a nerve, to undo the negativity and disconnection that plague the world. The line "If I could, I would tear this love from no one" speaks to the need to free oneself from the anxieties and self-doubt for a chance to love purely and wholly.
Overall, Aloha's "We Get Down" conveys a sense of longing for better times, a sense of hope paired with a shared predicament. The song's lyrics are metaphors for life, where people struggle to find hope, and obstacles are ever-present.
