@Peter Gilbert That's why I added, even at slow speeds. These little things are tested for impact and rollover. Not for crush. I think I need to go back to three words though... French, Socialist, Garbage. I have only owned one French car in my life, first and last, because unless it's the fun of a genuine classic 2CV or a hydromatic DS, they can't make a car to save their lives. I was only young when I bought a brand new 1994 Citroen AX. They put the spare wheel under the back of the car, in a little cage, that was already rusted before it was registered. Old men had clued up that unless you put your spare wheek in a bin liner, before putting it underneath, the wheel would be corroded before it would be ever be needed. Peugeot should have stuck to bicycles, and now they've merged anyway. It's like it's still 1975 in France, and I'm surprised they didn't buy Leyland!! (Optare btw. their best engineers pooled their redundancy cheques, and they started Optare) If this little plastic cube is an F45 fighter, then like the R.A.F I'd rather wait for the Tempest that's being made in Lancashire.

@Steven Macdonald but this vehicle won’t be ‘mon a motorway hit by a truck. Here’s what the Citroen website says: “As a quadricycle, Ami is not permitted to drive on motorways. Ami is designed for an inner-city environment. Fast roads are not made for Ami! We would recommend sticking to 20 and 30 mph roads where Ami is ideal”. And at these slower speeds the Ami presumably is less of a risk to pedestrians and cyclists - no 50mph ‘joyriding’ around town at night. And that’s a good thing btw.

I love it. I live 8 miles from the city here in Bulgaria. We don't have on-street charging anywhere. Parking in the centre is a nightmare. The public transport is GREAT. I got rid of my CL500 5.0L Mercedes cos that was insanity the city. But I am still left wiht like 30% of my trips that are by Taxi cos they dont fit the bus routes or I have something heavy etc...

This would be absolutely PERFECT.

it's soo ugly it's not . it went soo far off the scale of ugly that it transcended that and ended up in an alternative universe of ultra mega cool. I LOVE it .
i'm 75 physically , going on 14 mentally , so it would be perfect for me . just pad the bumpers with some super thick memory foam and i'm good to go.

American here, I drive a 2015 smart. I would love an electric, but where I live there is a lack of charging stations and the weather is quite cold, so battery life suffers. My car is the smallest it can get for around here, but I do like the Citroen Ami very much. Not all of us believe that bigger is better. Horsepower wars all over again. Can't use the horsepower in most of what is driving around. 600 horsepower sitting in traffic on the way to work behind a 70 horsepower smart car and they laugh at me.

This is amazing! I live in France and some roads are really narrow. And honestly this is great! It’s enough for a grocery run and that’s good enough. It’s like a SMART car! I was initially thinking of buying the Peugeot e-208 but I think I’ll get this instead! 😬 thanks for the video

Smart is German, also Mini is German because the brand is owned by BMW and the cars are designed and engineered in Germany, just assembled in UK. British car industry just doesn't exist anymore (sadly).

Looks like this particular video has the most views on this channel. Having watched pretty much every English speaking review there is, this is most certainly the best. Fun, funny and informative, combined with superb footage. I almost felt that I was there along for the ride with Johnny. I'll certainly be buying an Ami if it does indeed come to the UK. With a Type R FK8 for family duties and faster roads, I'll be using the Ami for local journeys combined with some commuting (32 miles per day)...should be interesting! @mr_glasgow84

I'm usually the old school type and i love older cars such as my Volvo 940, the reason behind this is the simplicity of them. Started this video thinking I'd hate it, turns out i love it! This is a cheap and simple car designed to be cheap and simple, not a scimped down version of a complicated concept. I absolutely adore the thing and all the smart design choices that made it cheap to manufacture!

This is a light quadricycle. A heavy quadricycle can do 80kph.... 50mph. They will probably do a heavy version next.

@AK 565 Well in the US it might work for urban areas for just a little getaround type car. LSVs do find success in America to some regard. Notably when public transit is lacking in urban areas.

Great review, tons of details and info available to compliment the review. Maybe the next generation will start doing things that make financial sense. No reason to buy a $40,000 gas car while making less than $50hr. An average person needs a real vehicle maybe once a week. The rest of the time it takes up space and empties your bank account.

This car is really nice! I only wish it was able to do about 70 kph so it wouldn't feel hazardous to drive in swedish cities with ringroads etc. I love the sleek look, that was what appealed to me with the c4 cactus. Citroen really does do fine cars when they don't try to compete with what is already on the market.

I love the thinking behind this. Car sharing companies have failed in many towns in the U.K. I remember a company in south London where I could jump into an smart car with my phone. We just had no parking space and locals became annoyed that the council had given the company access to their local spaces. The problem today will still be the same. £30 a month rental is great. But someone living in a flat would not be able to use this vehicle nor park it in London.

If it went to 100 km/hr then I would consider buying one. I want a small EV for short trips. but with roads around me with speed limits of 80 km/hr, the measly 45 just wouldn't cut it.

Love johnny and the great content he brings us all. However i have a question on safety, which doesn't seem to be mentioned? quads are not subject to the same tests as normal cars. So say a transit van or a ford ranger which are all the rage now (blame usa) hits the 14 year old in an ami, will he see his or her 15th birthday?

The limited mileage problem might be solved by having the spent battery easily and quickly replaced at a refuelling station with a fully charged battery. Instead of filling up with liquid fuel, refill the car with an exchange full battery. Cost of recharging the battery and battery replacement after X charges could be factored in every time the spent battery was stopped with a full one?

My dream car would be the smallest car possible (like that), with 4 passengers sit, 80kph (50mph) would be a good top speed and at least autonomy to 200km.
A car that serves the purpose to transport people to places without carrying about been powerful, fast or large.

With a top speed of 45 km/h you could only use this thing in the most central part of a large European city. And even then, keeping up with the traffic is going to be a problem. Dacia's take on the electric car makes much more sense. Great video btw. 🙂

Was designed for car hire. Unnecessary extra cost. You could easily charge the battery faster with a 20 euro charger but it decreases battery life.

@Jon T battery pack on this is about 6kWh, and on that Ami goes 70km, so with 200w you can get maybe 10-15km a day.
My daily commute is less than 10km.

I've been thinking about this. What it needs is a composite panel of great strength that can replace entirely the glass of the panoramic roof. Cut the glass out and bond a PV in. Won't add much weight then, would be about the biggest PV you can get on the car. Use PVs as efficient as possible. Who cares if it only adds 10 miles on a good day in summer in the UK? It's cool AF provided it isn't insanely expensive. I'll pay extra for uneconomical solar REX but there's a limit to how much extra.

Great review by Jonny Smith and The Late Brake Show. Jonny is someone who fully gets what the Ami is all about unlike the 5th Gear team who’s review on the Citroen Ami only proved how much they don’t understand Citroen or the concept of this latest clean and green city commuter run around.

IMO Citroen has the concept right. A lot of people in 'vertical' cites in the US have average drive of 10 miles or less on roads that average less than 30mph. BUT they need to carry more than one other person and bulky items AND they need to be able to do so no matter the weather.

This is the best I've seen so far.

A few years ago in DC we had Car2Go that was a car use service with SmartCars and a couple GLA class that you could hire and park anywhere in the city. It was great, until you got one that the kids had smoked a bunch of nasty skunk weed in. But otherwise it was ace!

It's going to need to have at least a top speed of 30, maybe even 40mph to be able to stand a chance in the UK. Even in cities 26mph is annoyingly slow, I'm sure you'd be getting beeped at alot. I really like the concept though

Great review, except this is the second review I've seen that hasn't mentioned or shown ease of parking. Would have thought this would be a big plus for a car like this. Is it short enough to fit 2 into a standard London meter bay perhaps?

Saw French reviews of this (just come across the channel so late here) and thought it was such a great idea so great to see an English review too - I only work about 5 miles from where I live so would be perfect for the commute and then just a bigger family car for other things. The cup holder behind the 'dash' is designed for a BT speaker to go in from the French reviews and I totally agree about the tech - so many reviews now end up with "but you are not going to bother you are just going to use Android Auto or Apple Car Play" so exactly....why waste money when we bring the tech into the car anyway!

Great, another vehicle that is just about 10kph too slow to keep up with flowing traffic. 55kph would be absolutely fine in most city driving scenarios but especially in cities with a little more aggressive drivers such as Hamburg where I'm from, you'll annoy most drivers at that speed and they will cut and tailgate the shit out of you in this, which makes it inherently more dangerous than the slightly higher top speed.

I like the fact that it hasn't got a big, unnecessary chunk of plastic between the driver's seat and the passenger's seat. That gives you a lot more leg room if you just want to chill in the car for a bit. I also like the fact that it has physical buttons. Range needs improving, though.

Loved your review. At about 8:20 you brought up an important aspect about practicality. Many northern cities around the world are hilly with poorly maintained roads and have cold, snowy winters and 35°C summers. AWD, abs/stability ctrl/traction ctrl, kick-ass HVAC and healthy ground clearance all strike me as must-haves, even for a purely urban vehicle. How many of these does the Ami have?

The car is oddly satisfying, it somehow feels like the future. I found it interesting that the people I noticed rubber-necking at it were an older generation, and the younger people couldn’t care less. I think that hints at a bit of a perspective shift of how younger people feel about cars. Understandable in massively congested cities, where vehicles are everywhere. It’s interesting to me, I love the utilitarian design features of it, the built on phone holder, the rubber trays, etc... perfect little city or airport hire vehicle.

I like it,but not as an EV.Instead ,imagine this with a small fuel efficient 4 stroke engine.Let's say a one cylinder with 4-5 HP,a top speed of 45 km/h,then you could drive it on the AM licence,which in Sweden means from 15 years of age.It would be perfect as an in city car,we have a 40 km/h cityspeed limit in Sweden today.

The problem with electric cars is they are reliant on external charging points if they can make the batteries easily removable and carried on a special trolley to your home where you can charge the batteries at your leisure it will make electric cars like this so much more practical

If you think about Londons average road speed is 15 to 20 mph .
Its a good city run around but needs slightly more range.

Loved the video on the Citron Ami that you started in Lichfield. How did I know it was Lichfield? You had been driving round talking about the car, the you said about giving it a proper drive. You came out of some gates on to round-a-bout , at that point I realized that on the other side was the road that took drivers on to my road, you didn't go that way of course as it was in a different direction to Coventry, but it was great to follow your journey going along the same route as we had taken ourselves to see family our selves in the past.

I don't drive, my husband does, I have a folding electric wheelchair, he has a scooter to use from the car for hospital appointments also for shopping as he sees as a complete waste of money to use the the car to shop, which was how we saved for the electric chair. I have got a large one but can't get it in the car so in the summer and winter before Christmas when its nice and can go out I will use by big W.chair, and he would use his electric trike.

That's a serious bit of kit that's 100% perfect for cities, large complexes, universities, zoos or sports parks. Would definitely be great for popping down to the shops!

Imagine it could go 70 miles an hour & had a 100 mile range ... And a 9k price tag. Perfect for teens at college , 250£ per month , 90£ insurance, 40£ on phone bill, 20£ to spend every month.
On a 400£ part time job :)

This will be the future of the city car, makes sense. Most cars on the way to the city are only single occupancy, occasionally 2, no pollution, perfect.

I can see it being used for takeway delivery as an alternitive to scooters, just needs a warmer added to mimic the Dominos Cars that appeared in the US.

Not sure if the top speed being 45 km/h is a requirement of its classification as a quadricycle, but it seems like maybe hitting 60 km/h would make this a lot more useful. That would cover most roads around the city I live in without having traffic pile up behind you or being constantly overtaken, and the few 70km/h roads you can kinda get away with 60km/h anyway as they're generally dual lane.

In France for a light quadricycle (accessible without a license, from 14 years old) the maximum speed is 45km/h.
There are also heavy quadricycles that go faster (about 80 or 90km/h I believe) but you need a special permit, from 16 years old.

30 years using that ring road and there is only one rule: too slow=danger. The shared on/off ramps only work if everyone is doing 40, so I bet that was pretty scary! Great video and a great little car. Let's hope they launch a service in the city...but no ring road use please, it won't end well!
