China
Amos (Tori) Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

China all the way to New York
I can feel the distance getting close
You're right next to me
But I need an airplane
I can feel the distance as you breathe

Sometimes I think you want me to touch you
How can I when you build a great wall around you
In your eyes I saw a future together
You just look away in the distance

China decorates our table
Funny how the cracks don't seem to show
Pour the wine dear
You say we'll take a holiday
But we never can agree on where to go

Sometimes I think you want me to touch you
How can I when you build a great wall around you
In your eyes I saw a future together
You just look away in the distance

China all the way toNew York
Maybe you got lost in Mexico
You're right next to me
I think that you can hear me
Funny how the distance learns to grow

Sometimes I think you want me to touch you
How can I when you build a great wall around you
I can feel the distance

I can feel the distance
I can feel the distance getting close

Overall Meaning

The song "China" by Tori Amos is a beautiful ballad about the bittersweet feelings of love and distance in a relationship. The song starts with Amos singing about feeling the distance between herself and her lover, even when they are right next to each other. She is yearning for more, but she cannot bridge the gap between them, even with physical closeness. She likens the distance between them to the distance between China and New York, which creates a metaphorical journey of longing and isolation.

Amos then sings about her lover's emotional detachment and compares it to the Great Wall of China, a massive symbol of protection and defense. Despite Amos's desire for intimacy and connection, she cannot breach the barrier her lover has created, and their relationship remains at arm's length. She then sings about how their relationship is like a cracked piece of China on their table, that even though it's broken, they try to ignore the damage and continue to pour wine and make small talk.

The song ends with Amos admitting that she feels the distance growing between them, even though they are physically close. She longs for connection, but her lover's emotional walls are too high to climb. The song is a melancholic reflection on the complexities of love and communication in relationships.

China decora nuestra mesa

Words cannot express the beauty contained in this song.

+Francisco Partida That's what a song is. Words and music. The videos just ruin the experience. There was a time when people would purchase something called a "Hi Fi system" and just sit and listen to music. It was magic, and it's all but gone now in today's world. Sad.

+Rusty Z I cannot put it any better.
