Sleep Tight
Andrea Bocelli / Sarah Brightman Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We saw Fantasia in a far off land,
Cry for the living in the desert sand.
They waited underneath a splintered moon.
To hear the beating of an ancient tune.

Sleep tight.
The reaper's waiting in the wings.
Sleep tight.
To reap a man of many things.
Sleep tight.
Look through the eyes of destiny.
Sleep tight.
We find the kingdom but He holds the key.

I met a seer who believes and dreams,
our blood is running through eternal streams.

Dust you'll return and dust you shall remain.
Cuz that's the only heart that beats and beats again.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Andrea Bochelli and Sarah Brightman's song Sleep Tight convey a sense of melancholic and spiritual reflection on life and death. The first few lines suggest a surreal experience where the singer witnessed Fantasia in a far-off land and the desperation of people living in the desert crying out for life. The splintered moon highlights the imperfections of the world and the search for an ancient tune (a reference to a primal and original way of life).

The refrain "Sleep Tight" adds a layer of irony to the lyrics. It is usually said to comfort someone before they go to sleep, but here it takes a slightly more sinister meaning. The reaper is waiting in the wings, an ominous reminder that death is always present. The reference to reaping a man of many things suggests that it isn't just mortal life that is being taken away but the things we accumulate in life, highlighting the transience of material possessions.

The third and fourth lines of the refrain suggest that destiny holds the key to the kingdom, implying that something beyond our control is at work. The following lines, "I met a seer who believes and dreams, our blood is running through eternal streams," connect the singer to a person who sees life beyond mortality, and believes that our existence is something more significant and everlasting. The last line, "Dust you'll return and dust you shall remain. Cuz that's the only heart that beats and beats again" links the refrain's idea of death and the transience of life back to the bigger picture, implying that life returns to its primal form, becoming a part of the earth and the dust.

Quando sono solo
Sogno all’orizzonte
E mancan le parole
Sì lo so che non c’è luce
In una stanza quando manca il sole
Se non ci sei tu con me, con me

Su le finestre
Mostra a tutti il mio cuore
Che hai acceso
Chiudi dentro me
La luce che
Hai incontrato per strada

Time to say goodbye
Paesi che non ho mai
Veduto e vissuto con te
Adesso si li vivrò
Con te partirò
Su navi per mari
Che, io lo so
No, no, non esistono più
It’s time to say goodbye

I was at work when I discovered this song. My husband was in the hospital with leukemia and he was losing the battle. I cried like a baby. 22 years later I still cry. I still talk to my husband a lot because I believe he can hear. Our bodies die but our spirit lives on.
