Oh Urania
Andrew Gold Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

One hundred million billion stars up in the sky,
Each one looks so beautiful reflected in your eyes.
I wonder if there could be life up there,
A perfect world evolving anywhere.

Down here the people have such problems on their hands,
Nothing to believe in and fear divides the land.
Can it be so unhappy everywhere?
Is there a place where everybody cares?

Oh Urania... Take me with you
Oh... Take me away.

One hundred million billion stars up in the sky,
Each one looks so beautiful reflected in your eyes.
I wonder if there could be life up there,
A perfect world evolving anywhere.

Oh Urania... Take me with you
Oh... Take me away.

Uh...

Oh Urania... Take me with you
Oh... Take me away.

Oh Urania... Take me away (Take me away)
Oh Urania... Take me away (Take me away)
Oh Urania... Take me away (Take me away)
Oh Urania... Take me away (Take me away)
Oh Urania... Take me away (Take me away)
Oh Urania... Take me away (Take me away)
Oh Urania... Take me away (Take me away)

Oh Urania... Take me away (Take me away)
Oh Urania... Take me away (Take me away)

Overall Meaning

Andrew Gold's song "Oh Urania" is a yearning, wistful track that contemplates the idea of escaping to a perfect world that may or may not exist out there in the vast expanse of the universe. With the opening lines, "One hundred million billion stars up in the sky, each one looks so beautiful reflected in your eyes," Gold establishes the cosmic theme that runs through the song, juxtaposed with a decidedly earthly, human perspective. The lyrics lament the issues and struggles of the world "down here," referencing "problems on their hands" and "fear dividing the land." The singer wonders if there could be a place where "everybody cares," an ideal world that is the stuff of science fiction but is yearned for by many who are disillusioned with the often-chaotic reality of life on Earth.

The titular Urania, named after the Greek muse of astronomy, represents the idea of finding such a utopia among the stars. Gold pleads in the chorus, "Oh Urania, take me with you... take me away," acknowledging the unlikelihood of this happening but expressing a desperate desire for an escape from mundanity nonetheless. The final repetition of the chorus is punctuated by the repeated phrase "Uh," as if the singer's plea has gone unanswered, leaving him stranded on Earth to deal with its problems and imperfections.

Yes, very sad to read he has passed. I had no idea until just now. I loved his music and I always carried him around as a friend. I had just never met him. In 2006 I was laid up with a back problem and could not move. I was on my own so could only connect with people on the Internet and one day thought of Andrew. I found his email address and wrote to him. He wrote back. Yes, thank you for being a friend.
