See Her On The Weekend
Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness Lyrics

Up around ten with a headache kicking
Guess I fell asleep with a cigarette
My girl's back home with the morning sick
Got a baby on the way, not here yet
And I'm alright, I think we're good
Yeah, I drink more than the doctors say I should
I've been a little hard to reach, but my girl is at the beach
And I'll see her on the weekend

I'll see her on the weekend
I'll see her on the weekend
I'll see her at the end of the week

Friday comes, lately I'm sleeping
Until the sun fills up my rented room
I pack my things, get my car started
Yeah I've been gone but I'll be home real soon

Cell phone's dead, and she's calling
Message box is full

Up around ten with a headache kicking
Guess I fell asleep with a cigarette
My girl's back home with the morning sick
Got a baby on the way, not here yet
And I'm alright, I think we're good
Yeah, I drink more than the doctors say I should
I've been a little hard to reach, but my girl is at the beach
And I'll see her on the weekend

I'll see her on the weekend
I'll see her on the weekend
I'll see her at the end of the week

Friday comes, and she's calling
Message box is full

Up around ten with a headache kicking
Guess I fell asleep with a cigarette
My girl's back home with the morning sick
Got a baby on the way, not here yet
And I'm alright, I think we're good
Yeah, I drink a little more than the doctors say I should
I've been a little hard to reach, but I know you're at the beach
And I'll see ya on the weekend

I'll see her on the weekend
I'll see her on the weekend
I'll see her at the end of the week

I'll see her on the weekend

I'll see her on the weekend
I'll see her at the end of the week

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Andrew McMahon's song "See Her On The Weekend" follow the story of a man who is dealing with the aftermath of a wild night of partying. He wakes up with a headache and a cigarette burning out in his hand, revealing that he fell asleep while smoking. He cannot be with his partner at the time, since she is pregnant and experiencing morning sickness. The singer, however, is not panicking; he feels they are okay, even though he drinks more than his physician may want him to. He plans to see her that weekend when he is finally able to make it back home.

The song emits a mellow tune overall, but has an upbeat rhythm that intensifies with every repetition of “I'll see her on the weekend” which implies the singer’s keenness to meet his partner. The lyrics commend a simple, yet meaningful message about priorities and the importance of setting limits, even if it's hard to do. The song contrasts the trap of addiction with the promise of commitment, love and commitment to one's partner.

I fell in love with this band/artist as soon as I heard "Cecilia and the Satellite" and then with their follow up "High Dive" I was hooked. I have now discovered all their other great tunes, thanks to YouTube and can honestly say there is not a bad song on their album. I'm following them on Twitter now and am praying that they will come to play in Calgary, AB, Canada one day. Great music and meaningful lyrics. Thanks Andrew.
