Peterson’s artistic successes may be surpassed by his skill in connecting people, embodied in the Rabbit Room online community (RabbitRoom.com), which gathers contributions from authors, songwriters, and pastors, encouraging creativity and referencing its ultimate source. The thread of community, also a theme of Counting Stars, imbues his beloved annual Christmas show, Behold The Lamb Of God, a long-running multi-artist tour based on Peterson’s original Christmas album of the same name. In all of these works, Peterson’s listeners can hear reminders that community, beauty, and hope all point back to the God “who gave music the power to carry his light into the darkness.” Andrew, his wife Jamie, and their three children make their home in Nashville.
Come

The sound of the scream and the sight of the blood
My son he saw as the animal died
In the jaws of the dog as the river ran by
I said, "Come back soon."
It's there on the page of the book that I read
The boy grew up and the yearling was dead
And wept for the death of his little boy heart
I say, "Come back soon."
We wake in the night in the womb of the world
We beat our fists on the door
We cannot breathe in this sea that swirls
So we groan in this great darkness
For deliverance
Deliverance, O Lord
I sit on the bench at the bend in the trail
And I can feel in the fall the final exhale
The trees of the field all wring their hands
And the leaves go by like a funeral band
I say, "Come back soon."
We wake in the night in the womb of the world
We beat our fists on the door
We cannot breathe in this sea that swirls
So we groan in this great darkness
Are we alone in this great darkness?
If nature's red in tooth and in claw
Then it seems to me that she's an outlaw
'Cause every death is a question mark
At the end of the book of a beating heart
And the answer is scrawled in the silent dark
On the dome of the sky in a billion stars
But we cannot read these angel tongues
And we cannot stare at the burning sun
And we cannot sing with these broken lungs
So we kick in the womb and we beg to be born
Deliverance!
Deliverance, O Lord!
Andrew Peterson's song "Come Back Soon" reflects on the inherent pain and longing that comes with living in a broken world. The first verse describes a traumatic event, likely from the singer's childhood, where he witnessed an animal being killed by a dog in the midst of a flood. The second verse references a story from a book where a character mourns the loss of his innocence and childhood. Both verses end with the refrain "Come back soon," wishing for the return of something lost.
The chorus speaks to the universal feeling of being trapped and suffocated in the "sea that swirls" around us, longingly groaning for a way out. The final verse paints a melancholic image of death, with trees wringing their hands and leaves falling like a funeral procession. The answer to the pain and longing in the world seems out of reach, written in "angel tongues" and the "billion stars" of the sky. In the face of brokenness and the inability to fix it, the only thing left to do is kick and scream for deliverance.
Overall, "Come Back Soon" is a beautiful and poignant meditation on the human experience of suffering and longing. Peterson's beautiful prose and haunting melody create a powerful emotional resonance that lingers long after the song has finished.

Lyrics
Gather round ye children come
Listen to the old, old story
Of the power of death undone
By an infant born of glory
Son of God, Son of Man
Gather 'round, remember now
How creation held its breath
How it let out a sigh
And it filled up the sky with the angels
Son of God, Son of Man
So, sing out with joy for the brave little boy
Who was God, but He made Himself nothin'
Well, He gave up His pride
And He came here to die like a man
Therefore, God exalted Him
To the place of highest praises
And He gave Him a name above every name
That at the very name of Jesus, Son of God
We would sing out with joy for the brave little boy
Who was God, but He made Himself nothin'
Well, He gave up His pride
And He came here to die like a man
So, in heav'n and earth and below
Every knee would bow in worship
Ev'ry tongue would proclaim
Jesus, He reigns with the angels
So, sing out with joy for the brave little boy
Who was God, but He made Himself nothin'
'Cause he gave up His pride
And He came here to die like a man
So, gather round ye children come
Listen to the old, old story

Love the intro and melody. Your work is fantastic and I'll be picking up a copy for Christmas My only thought is that pride is only referred by God as a sin, so I get the sentiment, but by nature as God, he couldn't give up something he didn't have. He gave up power and glory and position.
@becausestonecoldsaidso7099
The word “pride” can also mean “one’s own dignity or position”, which would fit here, as we see in the book of Philippians:
Php 2:6 Who, BEING IN THE FORM OF GOD (emphasis mine) in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be EQUAL WITH GOD:
Php 2:7 But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:
