Mustang Sally
Andrew Strong Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Guess you better slow that Mustang down
Mustang Sally now, baby
Guess you better slow that Mustang down
You've been runnin' all over town
Ooh, I guess you gotta put your flat feet on the ground
Sing it to 'em one more time, girls
All you wanna do is ride around Sally, come on (ride, Sally, ride)
All you wanna do is ride around Sally (ride, Sally, ride)
All you wanna do is ride around Sally (ride, Sally, ride)
All you wanna do is ride around Sally, tell you (ride, Sally, ride)
One of these early mornings
I'm gonna be wiping those weeping eyes, yeah, alright
I bought you a brand new Mustang
It was nineteen sixty-five
Now you come around signifyin' a woman
Girl, you won't, you won't let me ride
Mustang Sally now, baby
Guess you better slow that Mustang down
Alright
You been running all over town
Oh, I guess you gotta put your flat feet on the ground
Oh yeah, baby, you gotta put your flat feet
All you wanna do is ride around Sally (ride, Sally, ride)
All you wanna do is ride around Sally (ride, Sally, ride)
All you wanna do is ride around Sally, oh yeah (ride, Sally, ride)
All you wanna do is ride around Sally (ride, Sally, ride)
One of these early mornings
I'm gonna be wiping those weeping eyes, yeah
Oh yeah, baby, come on, boys
Those weeping eyes, oh yeah, babe (Sally)
Those weeping eyes (Sally), yeah, yeah
Those weeping eyes (Sally), yeah, yeah (Sally)
Oh, those weeping eyes (Sally)
Those weeping eyes (Sally)
Those weeping eyes (Sally), yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
The lyrics to Andrew Strong's "Mustang Sally" are about a woman named Sally who is constantly on the move in her Mustang, leaving the singer feeling neglected and unimportant. The song begins with the singer addressing Sally directly, telling her to slow down her Mustang and stop running around town. He tells her that all she wants to do is ride around, and that he will eventually have to "put her flat feet on the ground" to get her to settle down. The chorus consists of the singer repeatedly telling Sally that all she wants to do is ride around, and that one day he will make her regret neglecting him.
The second verse reveals that the singer has bought Sally a new Mustang in 1965, which highlights the level of his devotion and desire to please her. However, Sally has come to symbolize a woman who is not easily satisfied and always wants more. She uses the new Mustang as an excuse to distance herself from the singer and assert her independence. The singer acknowledges that he has had enough of Sally's tendency to neglect him, and he will soon be wiping her weeping eyes.
Overall, "Mustang Sally" is a powerful and emotive song about the frustrations of unrequited love and mistreatment, expressed through the metaphor of a powerful and fast car. The Mustang represents Sally's desire for freedom, independence, and adventure that the singer is unable to provide.
