1) Andy Andranik Madadian ( اندی آندرانیک مددیان), better known by his stage name "Andy", is an Iranian Armenian singer and former professional soccer player currently based in Glendale, California. He is often referred to as the "Persian Elvis Presley."

He has been awarded Best Armenian International Singer of the year four times and in 1994 Universal Studios declared Andy the best Iranian singer of the decade. Andy has released fifteen music albums since the start of his career including "And My Heart..." in which he sings five tracks in Persian, two in Armenian, two in Spanish, two in English, one in Arabic, and one in Hindi. His music is currently banned by the government in Iran, but bootleg versions of his albums can be found very easily.

I agree with all your criticisms. I can accept warfare being... sort of broken on release, since it's (ostensibly) not the focus of the game, but they'd better make some changes swiftly via patches (naval blockades, anyone?), before a full-on overhaul with an expansion.

I also don't like the 3D avatars either - I can't help but feel that they thought "we spent so much money on CK3; it'd be a shame not to use this tech in other games."

I'd honestly prefer paintings sourced in from Wikimedia.

And, yeah, the warfare sprites and graphics could look much more interesting.

I'm also expecting to be bamboozled/annoyed by a bunch of logistics-related shenanigans. The game doesn't really seem to model the internal movement of goods too well (hence Spiffing Brit's breaking the game with a tiny island; courtesy of the Russian Merchant Fleet)

@DeusVult Exactly this! You won’t like your game if you’re not interested in the time period as a new player.

I’m a bit of a history nerd and I’ve read several books on the history of Poland. Every PDX game I play I like to re-invent history by creating my own timeline and making an alternate universe version of Poland. CK3 and EU4 are perfect for that!

That being said I have many years of experience with paradox games and I don’t JUST play Poland. It’s just a country I come back to when I’m bored of achievement hunting or role playing as one of the Sons of Ragnar or Iberian lords in 867.

Pick the one that you know the most about, or want to know the most about - and play it.

If you’re a fan of WW2 - pick HOI4.
If you’re a fan of the industrial revolution Vicky 3 or even 2.
You get the gist!

depends what you want:

Crusader kings 3 is a bit easier and it is about managing a dynasty and getting your family to be the best in the world. Its fast paced and you will being doing many wars and schemes (assassinations, kidnapping, etc.) but don't have to worry much about economy.

Europa Universalis 4 is about your nation and you manage you political situations and try to take over the world. Its slower paced but can have some big events.

Hearts of iron 4 is about war and portrays ww2, and it has you focus on rapidly building industry and having massive wars with large front lines. It starts slow but gets crazy very quickly.

Victoria 3 is about managing your nation's economy and trade as well as its alliances with other nations. Its slower paced.

Stellaris is a space game where you manage a nation that colonizes planets and gets into conflict or treaties to either make peace with or take over the galaxy. Its slower paced but can have intense situations like betting it all on a large fleet battle, or destroying useful enemy planets to end a war quicker.

Disclaimer: Since this went over everybody and their mothers' heads (guess I forgot about Poe's law), the "amazing Imperator: Rome" comment was a half-joke. Obviously that's not the first game you think of when thinking of Paradox (both CK2/3, EU4, HOI4, and Stellaris come to mind). BUT, I do think the game is great after years of patching, and the 2.0 version made it into the game it should've been at launch. I knew Vic3 was going to be trash. It’s another Creative Assembly issue. Where the company stayed the same, but all the employees changed. Paradox is as morally bankrupt as EA, very very sad.

Yeah, war aside (fingers crossed), the 3d characters feel kinda off ngl. I've seen some hoi4 mods that perfect still portraits, with some sfx n stuff, 3d portaits seems like quite a blockade for modders as well.

At this time my ancestors were in the Republic of Texas. I can't wait to probably lose the war against Mexico many times until I finally figure out how to play this game and then turn the Republic into the powerful independent nation it could've been. Our economy will be based around our 4 main resources: Cattle, Cotton, Oil, and Rednecks

this is far from a masterpiece. it suffers from all they problems of imperator rome, every faction plays and feels the same. warfare is boiled down to a single slider bar. in victoria 2 capitalist nations could not just build any factory you wanted. you had to try and get the rich capitalists to build them. that is not simulated here. you just go click the button on what you want built. no matter what kind of society or government it is. it is probably more accessible than vic 2. and does look so much better. but it feels like a shallow generic experience. which will probably be fixed in future 30 dollar dlc.

How good is Victoria 3 compared to EU4 in terms of complexity, depth and difficulty (and fun :p). Both when you play it for the first time and after you learned the mechanics/are good at the game (if it stays challengeing even after the initial hurdle) - is it still fun then with high replayability(like EU4). Would you say this has overtaken EU4 in being you favorite pdx game? (or can it be with more polish and or content)

Great review btw. - it has taken me one step closer of wanting to finally get into a pdx game. Indecisive between EU4 and this one, that's why I'm asking :p

Theoretically this could be fixed with unemployent pay and givining money to workers when you kick them if you push social reforms. AI logic could then determine if its worth it or not to kick them.

I have been waiting for this game for ages! Well, anticipating is a better word. :) As someone who has enjoyed Vicky 2 a long time agao, got frustrated with EU4 yet spent hundreds of hours in it and ultimately someone who has booted up HOI4 more than almost any other game in my adult life... This is going to be amazing. Eventually. I might let a few months and maybe a few DLC's pass. Or is it worth just diving in NOW? :)

You could probably hold off. The AI is not in a really good state now, especially if you enjoy the historical side of these games. Japan never reforms into an empire, the US rarely eats its historical parts of Mexico (and it sometimes eats part of canada too), Austria & Russia are way too stable, and Prussia sometimes struggles with forming a nice looking Germany. I've also seen Egypt eat parts out of the Ottoman Empire (in one video it took Istanbul) and never get conquered by the British too.

Honestly I'm perfectly fine with this war system for now, Victoria 2 has one that is to similar to Eu4 in my opinion and by the time you get to the WW1 era it's really weird to move tanks and planes like infantry on the map

By the time, Vic3 development has begun, they had HOI4 functioning and being SUCCESSFUL for quite a while. Noone asked them to invent a bike - just use what works.

Seem to be great in many ways, just very disappointed about the warfare system. Is it possible for a smaller army to take down a bigger army? (Armies of similar technology) In VIC2 the micromanagement made that possible. Hope we will see a mod or update.

Yeah, a better quality army can beat a larger and more primitive army I guess. I like to play minor nations, let's say Denmark and then try to get some parts of Sweden or Norway, but don't know if that is still possible. Well just have to wait and see how it goes

I'm all for the concept of the new War system, I just think it needs to be fleshed out a bit (which it probably will be in the future to be fair). I will absolutely not miss micromanaging units, but the promised tradeoff was that you'd get to micromanage building your army instead. But with "production methods" deciding what tier of troops you have, all units using the same resources regardless of if they're crack French infantry or Indonesian peasants, and the fact that you have no control over the army composition at all beyond expanding certain buildings makes me sad.

They should revamp the military resource management a bit, make it less abstracted and more hands-on, disconnect the military resources from the rest of the economy (not entirely of course, but different nations should produce different quality stuff). That way smaller nations could barter with the great powers over military assistance, getting high quality weapons at a greater expense before they can manifacture their own. Navies are also abstracted far too much.

I'm also dissapointed that they went with a traditional tech tree system rather than something new. I would have liked to see a system where the technologies are indirectly researched, a bit like how innovations worked in Vicky 2. Instead of picking what to research and when, tech should be driven by your pops education and what they work with. That way, education spending would help boost tech, slowly but surely. Having a massive navy (lots of pops hired in naval facilities) would drive naval tech forwards faster, having a massive army would drive military tech, a massive industry drive engineering forwards etc. etc. It's not that I think the current system is bad, it's just a massive missed oppertunity.

All that being said, I think the game looks like great fun, even though it might need some balance tweaks. I will definitely buy it on release.

@notrobert semi-official position of Paradox is that the game never existed so there was no failure and no abandonment of it without even fixing most annoying bugs.

Vic 3 tries to get cheapening base game at release to the new level. Earlier we had barebones games, with "meat" being added by constant flow of DLCs - but Vic3 can't be even called that because"barebones", suggests, there is full skeleton and not plenty of placeholders here and there. PDX literally took one of most complex core mechanic of their GSGs and replaced it with ONE SLIDER. And due to the current game architecture, I don't see them anyhow fixing it - instead devs would continue telling players how that new mechanic is exactly what they wanted despite NOONE ever asked for this.

Not buying Vic3 anywhere soon. Had this enough with Imperator - which I actually enjoyed and hoped a lot for further improvement because game HAD potential. So, wasting money and time on another future failure which COULD be good but was never made such - no, thanks.

I'm not sure about the war system. I guess I will determine it myself. It's important to make it very difficult and costly for the player. There has to be a chance that the player fails. Since I've seen some streamers fail to achieve their goals in wars this seems to work.

About the "Europa universalis achievement"
The Pan-european manifesto was written and published in 1923, but technically written document about the concept are more ancient (I red that in my old school history book)
During the late napoleonic wars in France they discussed about creating a proto european federation that would have united all the members markets.
This was an alternative way to defeat the British empire, by creating a big hostile market that would have impoverished them an surrender in a trade war, so France wouldn't need to invade it military.
The idea was scrapped by french military/nationalists because it would have paradoxically weakened the centrality of France in the continent than wanted to keep as dividend subjects.

Honestly, them making a somewhat nonexistent war mechanics is great, I finally will be able to focus on my favourite parts of Vic 2: economics and politics. Well, I can definitely say I’ll be waiting a year, or so before I buy. Yes it looks awesome and cool, but the lack of a warfare system (beyond background happenings) is definitely a dumb move. I don’t understand why they did it tbh. But I look forward to buying it in a year when needed mapmods and warfare revamps are added and protected. I’m sure it has a great future (like CK3 despite the game still feeling barebones), but unfortunately Paradox didn’t do what needs to be done to make the game beyond amazing at launch. It’s pretty good from what I’ve seen, but a 9.5 can always become a 10/10, or break the scale and go for an 11/10.

As someone who wanted to love Vic2 but was too complex, barely understands EU4 and has almost 500 hours in HoI4, Vic3 is the game I wanted Vic2 to be. Not easy, but satisfying when something goes right and easier to grasp the mechanics

I missed Vicky2 (I play other Paradox games), but none of the videos, nor your review, convinced me much about the qualities of Victoria 3. I like map painting, that's why I love EU (I played a lot of all four) and Crusader Kings, but from what I've seen about Vic3, it seems to me that you don't have that much control. Every now and then you move some indicator, once in a bazillion years you unlock a policy, but that's about it, the game runs itself. At least that's how all the presentations of the game I've seen so far affect me.

The game doesn't run itself at all - that's basically what Vicky 2 was, a game running itself where you just nudged it in a few directions. Here you ACTUALLY have control over your entire country - or at least the ability to influence it to large degrees - and even though the tactics of the warfare system is lackluster, the planning and preparation is still fun. Honestly it's a 50-50 combat system, it just needs more player interaction+animations to be really great.

I've purchased most of Paradox games for many years upon release, but the greed they've shown with the poor DLC and increase in pricing I will no longer support. I will not purchase the game at release and I hope others follow suit. Things need to change at Paradox - their practices are shady and not acceptable. Then decided to try Hoi4. And now it is snowballing out of controll.
HOI4 -> ck2 -> EUIV -> Stellaris -> CK3 -> and now Vic 3.

I actually kind of like the idea of an indirect war system. It feels more appropriate to early modern and modern wars, discourages Risk-like map painting, and could also be pretty interesting strategically. It seems like they have to do a lot of expanding on that front though to give it the depth - both in gameplay and in narrative - in deserves.

It would be great if it showed how what changed by forcing us to be more strategic rather than chuck columns of men to run at front line.

It should slowly become a more static and grindy system to represent ww1 and should be even more costly by the time we reach 1910.

Vik 2 was just so much harder to get into, and playing a minor country was pretty difficult. I tried many times but usually went back to EU4 and CK. This one looks better however and hopefully its fun.

Am I the only one who is looking forward to this new war system? The least fun parts of EU4 and CK3 is war. If I never have to build another unit of cavalry, or chase down a tiny army stack rampaging through my territory, I'll be happy. Those games are most fun when country building and warring is an annoying distraction. They're most fun when you have to interact with wars the least. Think about it. EU4 is most fun when you've stacked military modifiers to such a level that you don't have to play the war part of the game. I've always liked Paradox games for everything besides the wars and I'm surprised to learn there's a significant chunk of Paradox gamers who would choose to play them FOR the wars. Just weird to me. They're boring, unfun, and frustrating.

I agree, though we must remember both vic2 and eu4 had war dlcs to fix them. I suppose we will get a new "hearts of darkness" dlc that will make war and colonialism better.

I just hope they eventually make a change that makes war different by the end game to represent trench warfare.

I liked the pop mechanics in Stellaris when it launched and now I hate it (Also do I need to mention the Common Sense DLC?). "But just change back to a previous version" doesn't cut it as all actual bug fixes won't get fixed and mods become useless. I'll wait for another 3 to 4 years and check back or until I get stupid amounts of money.... so that would be 3 to 4 years.

all they really needed to do was make a more updated vic 3 and would have easily succeeded . we will see what they do here. Imperator rome has very little to distinguish it from other games because it tried to combine many good things from Eu/CK and it all came up shallow and a very short term game to play. @Andy's Take Sadly it also is abandoned. Imperator always needed some depth to interact with it's systems so you could create stories. It always had the one thing I love about CK2 and early EU4: it's unscripted sandboxy feel... it has so much potential.

This was one of the best things they could do in what is at the core an economical and political simulator. I'll play HoI if I'm feeling like clicking little animated sprites of tanks and infantry. It's GRAND Strategy, not micro-everything-strategy. I always look at it as if I'm playing a president. Presidents don't bother themselves with ordering individual divisions/battallions around (well, the good ones anyway.....looking at you, Vladimir!)

It's like complaining that HoI4 doesn't feature manually making labour laws and super detailed factory building and trade systems. That's not what HoI is about, so those aspect get abstracted. The same goes for Victoria but the other way around: this franchise doesn't have war as its focus, so I welcome a fresh take on abstracting it. Whether the implementation is good or not remains to be seen of course, but the idea itself is valid.....

The lacklustre warfare (in a game about a time period where warfare was pivotal and ever-evolving), the overabundance of menu-hopping (even for a paradox title) and the sheer amount of DLC on the horizon (they are gonna need to fix this somehow and it won't be for free) is gonna be a major no for me. I love paradox and I love their games but this seems like another Imperator'ish title so I'm personally gonna skip this one.

@zugzwang not our problem. PDX can't optimize their shit - they lose players and money, PDX literally cuts down the integral parts of their GSGs to save effort of optimization - they again lose players and money.

I have a game in mind which I'd like to have and as long as PDX delivers something resembling that to a degree, I am in. But no amount of devs explaining to me that "this is what you wanted, you just don't know that yet" is going to convince me to waste my money on the game which has nothing to do with anything I expected of it.

It's just an improvement over vanilla vicky 2, but no one (and "no one" pretty much means die hards at this point, 12 years after release) plays vanilla. I see little reason to play full price with so few insentives to abandon the second entry.

Mods like HFM are great but they are just bandaids. By bandaids i mean that there are a lot of issues with VIC2s core systems that mods just patch over by railroading the player. A big example would be China’s westernization breaking the game. HFM bandaids this by forcing China to break up l. VIC3 actually fixes the flaws in the system that cause this issue.

To me, what Vicky 3 misses is the "YoU ShOuLd NoT FoCus On WaR"

The fact is, in Vicky 2, war was pain, especially in late game. So mechanichally, I wasn't encouraged to wage war all the time.

I was actually looking forward to this game when it was announced. Now after watching some gameplay and hearing the real lack of warfare and visuals beyond some map displays and menus, I think I’ll pass. Loved HOI4 and I get this isn’t meant to be that, but it’s not even close to Vicky 2 in many ways

I know I'm going to LOVE the new war system. In HOI4 I will choose generals and stuff, while building my country up and diplomacy, and once war breaks out I switch to observer mode. lol. The mechanics are just too complicated, I think, so I can't wait for this! I'm more interested in the diplomacy and nation building part of the game with some war. :)

There isn’t a paradox game that doesn’t have mana in some sort of way, it’s not necessary a bad thing, it was just implemented pretty poorly in Imperator.

@Micael, yeah, I understand that dilemma. I can't even propose to boycott Paradox, because if their games don't sell they will be driven out of the market and there will be no one left to make good grand strategy games. It's truly depressing.

In the past I was a big enthusiast of Total War, but the quality of their games has decreased ever since Medieval II.

@Hugo Ferreira The things is, I don't see another option to feed this hobby of mine, I love history, geopolitics and strategy, those games made by companies other than PDX feel so shit, I mean, take superpower 3 for instance, or geopolitical simulator 4/power & revolution, it's bugs and the game feels completly dead. Is Paradox greedy? No doubt about it, but the thing is, they deliver good products that can't even compare to its competition, and while they keep doing that, I don't see another alternative, I wont spend a cent for a shit show like superpower 3, sorry, but I just wont.

@Micael, I personally feel cheated and abused by this practice, because it makes me a hostage of their greed. I buy the early version, which is already expensive, just to find out that it's buggy and incomplete. Then they keep releasing DLC after DLC, all overpriced, adding the bare minimum in terms of content in each one of them.

They basically can decide how much money I will waste on them, because depending on their whim, they can either release two DLCs (as they did with Victoria 2) or twenty (as they did with CK2). It doesn't matter how many they release, they will all be more expensive than they are worth, and the biggest problem is that I can never know how many I will be required to buy before my game becomes whole.

@Insomnius in vic2 you had more realistic market mechanics that literally resemble the stock market in how pricing of goods work. Also you can run out and starve your economy for lack of iron, or food.
In this game you don't actually run out if the pops have money to get it.
The market mechanics of vic 2 honestly amazing me how nobody besides niche small indie games manage to get right. Yet pdx can't somehow after they literally made it.
Makes me think their the issue here not the system in concept.

I'll be honest I can't bring myself to care about Vicky3 at all.
I liked 1 and 2 but 3 simply appears to bloated and tedious without mechanical depth.
Which is a shame because some ideas had potential if properly developed, like a different war system for example.

Honestly i feel like they're kust releasing more unfinished games to pile dlc on. As time goes on each sequel begins with less somehow. Its weird. Hoi4 only got as detailed as hoi4 in like the last 3 dlcs. Even then divisional officers weren't a thing until recently. So at least they added some depth to that which hoi3 has.
As for ck3 vs ck2 its a similar problem i bet will be solved in time but honestly. Not paying for that much dlc for ck2 part 3.
