Bull began performing in and around Sydney in the early 2000s, eventually getting the attention of producer Tony Buchen in 2004. Buchen, having worked with other successful acts such as Blue King Brown, Macromantics and The Whitlams, felt that Bull's style of music required different approach to recording, and the two experimented with older recording techniques such as analogue.
Wanting to develop Bull's talent further, but still nurture his individual style, they then travelled together to New York City, where they produced and mixed songs for Bull's debut album at the Electric Lady Studios. Bull signed to Island Records, a part of Universal Music Australia, in 2007. In 2007, Bull supported Joss Stone on her Australian tour and, in 2008, increased in popularity by being played regularly by the radio station Triple J.
Bull's debut single was released in August 2008. Entitled "Small Town Girl", it was taken from his debut album We're Too Young. In 2008, Bull toured with Garage to V winners, Little Red. His first headlining national tour commenced in late 2008. A music video was also made for "Young Man," the second single from the album. Bull would continue to tour extensively in support of the album throughout the rest of 2008 and 2009, notably joining Tim Finn's national tour as an opening act, performing solo as opposed to with his six-piece band. He also opened for a MySpace secret show in Sydney featuring U.K. neo-soul singer Duffy in that same year.
In May 2009, Bull toured in support of Lisa Mitchell's Australian tour, prior to the July release of her Platinum selling debut album "Wonder". During the tour, Bull performed his support set solo. For her own set, Mitchell was to play guitar, accompanied by bass player Jan Bangma and drummer Robert Vasey. Before the second show of the tour, however, Mitchell's hand was cut in an accident. Due to Mitchell's injury, she was unable to play guitar and so Bull stepped in, learning the set on piano in lieu of the guitar parts. Bull played in the band for the remainder of that tour, fomenting Bull and Mitchell's friendship, which would lead to their collaboration on Bull's song "Dog" the following year.
In September of 2009, Bull released "We're Too Young", the recording of which had been completed the previous year with producer Tony Buchen. The album enjoyed a good critical reception, including a 4/5 star review in Rolling Stone Magazine.
Baby I Am Nobody Now

I could cut my hair
You could wear me thin
I'm on the outer getting envious
I need to begin
And then when I get in the crowd
I'll say the right thing I wont make a sound
But I'm nobody now
Baby I am nobody now
[Chorus 1]
Baby I am 1 of a kind
Baby I'm once in a lifetime
Everything you have I thought it would be mine somehow
But baby I am nobody now
Baby I am nobody now
[Verse 2]
The man on the street is him
They all look like your new boyfriend
I'd like to sink him on a ship
See if the rat swims
I'm gonna write you a book
I'm gonna rattle the cage
Oh it's amazing to think
If only time would allow
Baby I am nobody now
[Chorus 2]
Baby I'm 10 out of 10
Baby I'm once in a lifetime
Everything you have I thought it would be mine somehow
But baby I am nobody now
Baby I am nobody now
Baby I am nobody now
Now now now now
Baby I am nobody now
[Chorus 3]
Baby I'm a hell of a find
Baby I'm once in a lifetime
Everything you have I thought it would mine
[Chorus 4]
Baby I could do fine
Baby I'm not too proud
Everything you have I thought it would be mine somehow
Baby I am nobody now
[Outro]
(Baby I'm nobody now)
(No no no)
The Andy Bull song "Baby I Am Nobody Now" is a melancholy reflection on love, regret, and self-worth. The first verse finds the singer feeling inadequate and envious as they look at others who seem "thinner" and better able to fit in. They resolve to "begin" and try harder to make a connection, though they worry about stumbling over their words. In the chorus, the singer asserts their unique qualities, claiming to be "one of a kind" and "ten out of ten," but also acknowledges that these qualities haven't been enough to win the affection they desire. They lament that "everything you have I thought it would be mine somehow," implying that they've been left behind in someone else's life.
The second verse takes a darker turn, as the singer expresses jealousy toward the person they're addressing. They fantasize about hurting this rival in a symbolic way ("sink him on a ship") and vow to create something lasting and powerful to win the person's attention. However, they also acknowledge that time is running out and that they may never be able to claim their desired position. The later choruses repeat the same sentiments, with the singer vacillating between confidence and humility, pride and self-doubt. Overall, the song reinforces the idea that love can be transformative and resonates within us deeply, yet we don't always have the power to make it happen.

I could cut my hair
I am willing to make significant changes to please you
You could wear me thin
You have the power to shape me the way you want to
I'm on the outer getting envious
I am an outsider who is envious of the attention you get
I need to begin
I need to make a change to pursue you
And then when I get in the crowd
When I am finally noticed and accepted
I'll say the right thing I wont make a sound
I will conform to the expectations to gain your love
I could be 1 in a million baby
I have the potential to be unique and special
But I'm nobody now
But right now, I am just invisible to you
Baby I am 1 of a kind
I am unique and special, just like everyone else
Baby I'm once in a lifetime
I am a rare opportunity you should not miss
Everything you have I thought it would be mine somehow
I believed that you and all that you have were meant for me
The man on the street is him
The person on the street resembles your new partner
They all look like your new boyfriend
They all seem to be more attractive and better suited for you than me
I'd like to sink him on a ship
I have violent thoughts towards your new partner
See if the rat swims
I hope he suffers if he tries to swim away
I'm gonna write you a book
I will try to express my feelings in writing
I'm gonna rattle the cage
I will do something to get your attention
Oh it's amazing to think
It's incredible to imagine
If only time would allow
If I only had more time to make things right
Baby I'm 10 out of 10
I am perfect in every way
Baby I'm once in a lifetime
I am unique and special, just like everyone else
Baby I'm a hell of a find
I am a valuable discovery to make
Baby I could do fine
I can live without you and still do well
Baby I'm not too proud
I am humble and willing to do anything for you
Baby I am nobody now
I am still invisible to you
(Baby I'm nobody now)
I am still invisible to you
