Known for honest, self-reflective songs as well as captivating lyrical works of fiction and an intimate live show, Shauf is considered one of the most intriguing emerging songwriters around.
His release, The Bearer of Bad News, explores themes of uncertainty, curiosity and spirituality. “I think spirituality is a part of life whether you are religious or not, even if you’re just superstitious. You can’t really get away from the fact that we don’t know everything.” The unsettling stories told on The Bearer of Bad News came as Shauf wrote both at home and on the road. Musically, the record took shape in a modest home studio in his parents’ basement in Regina, Canada, where Shauf spent 4 years recording and producing each song himself. “Spending all this time allowed me a lot of freedom in the ways I arranged the songs. I could work on a drum part for a whole day, or play piano for 2 hours without figuring anything out and be okay with that.”
Bearer is 11 songs built from the sounds of a weathered piano, the warm tone of his guitar’s aged strings, and a clarinet. Shauf is one-of-a-kind voice and dark, literate storytelling.

And it reminds me of that night
When you said that you were coming home
Then I waited up 'til four in the morning
She says, "I remember, and why the fuck
Would this be a good time to bring that up?"
And I am silent, because I'm not sure
Sometimes I feel like I should never speak again
She takes my hand and says, "C'mon you know this one's my favorite song"
(Doo-doo, doo, doo-doo, doo, doo-doo)
(Doo-doo, doo, doo-doo, doo, doo-doo)
And I can see it in my mind
Those flames reaching so high
Into the night, and that poor family
Standing on the front lawn watching
And for some reason, I remember that feeling
Being almost jealousy
For a new beginning, but I should have known
That I was already burning it to the ground
But now that I'm dancing in the ashes, I just want it to be whole
(Doo-doo, doo, doo-doo, doo, doo-doo)
(Doo-doo, doo, doo-doo, doo, doo-doo)
And somehow with all that distraction
I still managed to pick a fight
When she got home, and all she had were questions
About those flashing red lights
And now the song is ending, Judy's leaving
And I'm getting one more right at last call
Claire orders three shots, Charlie raises his up
And we tip our heads back before we say goodnight
Now that I'm standing in the ashes
I just want it to be whole
Now that I'm standing in the ashes
I can't help but sing along
(Doo-doo, doo, doo-doo, doo, doo-doo)
(Doo-doo, doo, doo-doo, doo, doo-doo)
(Doo-doo, doo, doo-doo, doo, doo-doo)
(Doo-doo, doo, doo-doo, doo, doo-doo)
(Doo-doo, doo, doo-doo, doo, doo-doo)
In the song "Fire Truck" by Andy Shauf, the lyrics explore themes of regret, longing, and the destructive nature of relationships. The song begins with the imagery of a fire truck passing by, triggering a memory of a night when the singer's partner promised to come home but never did. The singer waited up until the early hours of the morning, only to be met with anger when bringing up the incident. This silence leaves the singer feeling unsure and contemplating the idea of never speaking again.
The narrative takes a turn as the partner takes the singer's hand and reminds them of their favorite song. This act of reconnecting through music highlights the bittersweet nature of their relationship, as it brings both comfort and pain. The scene then transitions to the singer visualizing flames reaching high into the night, symbolizing the destruction in their relationship. The mention of a "poor family" watching from their front lawn adds a layer of reflection, as the singer admits to feeling a sensation that's almost jealousy for a fresh start.
Despite the destructive nature of the relationship, the singer expresses a desire for wholeness, acknowledging that they are already standing in the ashes. The song concludes with a scene at a bar, where the singer picks a fight with their partner after they arrive home. The flashing red lights of the fire truck become a metaphor for the questions and conflicts within their relationship. As the night ends, the singer finds solace in joining others in a moment of shared camaraderie before saying goodnight.
Overall, "Fire Truck" delves into the complicated emotions tied to a failing relationship and the longing for closure and healing.
