NEVER SAY DIE
Angelic Upstarts Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There's gotta be a future somewhere
There's gotta be a chance out there
Look through your own eyes never stop
Close your ears to those on top
This country is for you and me
Even if it takes anarchy
The tune of glory's what we play,
We'll try and help you through your day
And we will never say die in our city
We'll never say die in our streets
We'll never say die in our city
Lit your fire and never cease
Put all the class behind you
Cause you never gotta stop
Make a noise for your future
Make a noise that will never stop
And we will never say die in our city
We'll never say die in our streets

We'll never say die in our city
Lit your fire and never cease

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Angelic Upstarts' song Never Say Die talks about hope and resistance in the face of adversity. The first two lines of the song express a desire for a brighter future and for opportunities to come. The following lines encourage listeners to view the world from their own perspective and to shut out the voices of those in power. The band believes that this country belongs to everyone, even if it means resorting to anarchy to achieve it.

The lyrics then shift to a focus on the power of music, specifically the "tune of glory" that they play. It serves as a beacon of light and hope to those who hear it, and they promise to help people get through their day. The repeating chorus, "We'll never say die in our city / We'll never say die in our streets / Lit your fire and never cease," is a rallying cry for listeners to take action and continue the fight for a better future. The song culminates in a call to action for listeners to leave their social class behind and make noise to create a future that will never stop.

In summary, Angelic Upstarts' Never Say Die encourages listeners to have hope amid despair and to take action to create a better future. The song stresses the importance of individual perspectives, resistance against systems of power, and the power of music as a tool for change.

Great tune.

How can you not know the lyrics to this song? Great!

"Still From the Heart" was the Upstarts' equivlant of Bad Religion's "Into the Unknown" (1983). Both albums may have attempted to reach a wider more "commercial" audience but ended up alienating earlier fans.

Dig both of them

This - and England - were always my fave AU songs. This represented a more mature AU. RIP Mensi, you'll be missed you bastard.

Fucking brilliant, any plans for belfast gigs.

Fucking brilliant, cheers me up when I'm pissed off, ..

This was part of a truly dreadful period for the band, no Punk band could really successfully make the transition to Pop as this shows.

Have to agree Vincent. I think Blitz started this move to being a New Order-style band with Telecommunication! Good thing is they and the Upstarts abandoned it after a while and went back to their roots. Liddle Towers, 2 Million Voices, You're Nicked and many other Upstarts classics have lasted the test of time. Thanks to YouTube I can revisit albums I got nicked by boneheads from my squat in the Elephant and Castle in '89!

Ian Purdy

I personally liked it when the oi bands all started getting into New Order and shit.
