Shut It Down
Animosity Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Self-soothing, self-improving but not long 'till we start shooting
Trained to be insane and punished for the same
Consider this a withdrawl of my own name
Where the fuck are we after two thousand years.
What have we become?
Just some cavemen with guns, almost like life is a game and we do it just for fun
Disable your brain and make your move to insane
Just do your fucking job and you won't be the one to blame
We are always the ones to blame.
I want to live free, no masters, no gods
Stay young until I die but somehow that's odd
A purposeful facade suppressing who we are... They ruined freedom so I am going to shut it down
Progress is less than gradual when we are still killing each other, seems like we will go a full circle end up back in trouble
I'm going to stand tall above the oppression above the hate
Stand firm on my own two feet, I know it's hard but I am going to carry my weight.
Fuck ignorance, I'd rather be the invisible man, and stay the fuck out of their master plan
Live my life, the way that I am supposed to, as a human, not as a fucking drone.
Every day, I look around and I see what we value and it boggles my mind

I can't participate any more
Shut it down!

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Shut It Down" by Animosity speak of the frustration and disappointment of the singer with the state of humanity after centuries of existence. The opening lines state that individuals can try to self-soothe and improve themselves, but it won't be long before they resort to violence. The singer notes that society rewards individuals for being insane but punishes them for it too. The singer also distances themselves from societal norms, and "withdraws" their own name, leaving the question of who they are behind. The singer wonders what has happened to humanity after thousands of years of evolution, and muses that humans are like "cavemen with guns," reducing life to a game done just for fun.

The chorus of the song is a call to shut down the social norms that the singer finds oppressive and nonsensical. The singer wants to live free, without any masters or gods, and remain young until they die. However, the singer notes that this is seen as odd, and people tend to suppress their true selves in order to fit in with society. The singer is frustrated with the lack of progress, as humanity is still killing each other, and it seems like they're going in circles, ending up back in trouble. However, the singer is determined to stand firm above the oppression and hate and carry their weight. The singer doesn't want to partake in the societal hierarchy anymore and therefore shouts, "Shut it down!"

Line by Line Meaning

Self-soothing, self-improving but not long 'till we start shooting
We may come across as calm and collected individuals working on self-improvement, but our violent tendencies are just beneath the surface, waiting to be unleashed at any moment.

Trained to be insane and punished for the same
Our society trains us to conform to its standards and ignore our own true nature. When our suppressed madness inevitably surfaces, we are punished for it.

Consider this a withdrawl of my own name
I am rejecting the societal expectations and norms that have been placed on me, and instead reclaiming my individuality and identity.

We have lost touch with our humanity, and instead become consumed by greed, power, and violence.

A purposeful facade suppressing who we are... They ruined freedom so I am going to shut it down
Society enforces a façade of conformity and social norms, which prevents us from expressing our true selves. This suppression of individuality has effectively destroyed our freedom, so we must take action to resist and overthrow these oppressive systems.

Progress is less than gradual when we are still killing each other, seems like we will go a full circle end up back in trouble
Despite claims of progress and advancement, we are still plagued by senseless violence and conflict. This lack of meaningful progress raises the concern that we are on a path to repeat the same mistakes of the past, plunging us back into chaos and strife.

Fuck ignorance, I'd rather be the invisible man, and stay the fuck out of their master plan
I reject the ignorance and mindlessness that society encourages, and prefer to stay out of the machinations of those in power who seek to control and manipulate the masses for their own gain.

Live my life, the way that I am supposed to, as a human, not as a fucking drone.
I will live my life according to my own values, beliefs, and identity as a unique individual, rather than blindly following the expectations and instructions of those in power.

The instrumentation specialy the drumming is superb! Why couldn't have deathcore turned out like this? Such wasted potential

Joseph Bastidas

Seriously it’s crazy how many careers started from this band. Navene has always been a great drummer and has only continued to get better over time.

Hogos Bazvarakh

Most of the good Deathcore bands grew up in the early 2000s from the Hardcore scene. Nowadays, the new bands care more about looks and generic song structures.

I feel so lucky that I've known about Animosity since 2005. One of my favorite bands of all time.
