She comes from the small central European nation of Slovenia and began training in dance and piano early on and she entered conservatory for piano and musical theatre when she moved to San Jose, California, at 14. It was there that she was finally able to truly immerse herself in another discipline sheβd been working at for some time: vocal performance.
Her original pop songwriting took shape as NOMAD, her first full-length record. She relied on the generosity of fans through Kickstarter, eventually topping $20,000 for the project. The first single from the album was nominated for Best Pop Song at the 2017 American Songwriting Awards.
One of Kotarβs goals with her music career is to create a βmultifaceted experience for the listener,β so she teamed up with designers to give each of the ten tracks on NOMAD a fashion piece to accompany it.
She plans to tackle the complexities of our digital lives with lyrical turn-of-phrase and visual symbolism, taking inspiration from Black Mirror and incorporating fashion at every opportunity.

The clouds covered in gray
Third coffee of the day
Ooh ooh ooh ooh
Almost fell asleep on Zoom
I yawn at the display
Third meeting of the day
But I can hear raindrops
Tap dancing on the roof
Itβs like theyβre calling out
βDonβt lose your youthβ cuz
I could stay inside and
Type away and sigh or
Make today
Just a little less mundane, oh
I could sit inside and
Type away and sigh or
Take today
Go out dancing in the rain, yeah
Oh oh na na na na
Oh oh na na na na na
Oh oh na na na na
Oh na na na
Oh na na na
When I was a little child
I naturally would see
Magic in the world βround me
Ooh ooh ooh ooh
Now I often get so tired
Itβs harder just to be
Fascinated, breathing free
Ooh ooh ooh ooh
But I can hear raindrops
Tap dancing on the roof
Itβs like theyβre calling out
βDonβt lose your youthβ cuz
I could stay inside and
Type away and sigh or
Make today
Just a little less mundane, oh
I could sit inside and
Type away and sigh or
Take today
Go out dancing in the rain, yeah
Oh oh na na na na
Oh oh na na na na na
Oh oh na na na na
Oh na na na
Oh na na na
Put on my rain boots,
My favorite chiffon dress,
I donβt care today what the neighbors might say
Put on my rain boots,
My favorite chiffon dress,
I donβt care today what the neighbors might say
I could stay inside and
Type away and sigh or
Make today
Just a little less mundane, oh
I could sit inside and
Type away and sigh or
Take today
Go out dancing in the rain, yeah
Oh oh na na na na
Oh oh na na na na na
Oh oh na na na na
Oh na na na
Oh na na na
Put on my rain boots,
My favorite chiffon dress,
I donβt care today what the neighbors might say
The lyrics to Anja Kotar's song "April" depict the singer's desire to break free from the monotony and find joy in the simple pleasures of life. The song starts off with the singer experiencing a lazy afternoon, with gray clouds and multiple cups of coffee, indicating a sense of boredom and restlessness. The reference to falling asleep on Zoom and attending endless meetings suggests a mundane routine that the singer is tired of.
However, the raindrops on the roof act as a metaphorical reminder for the singer to not lose their youth and sense of wonder. The rain symbolizes a refreshing change and an opportunity to break free from the monotony. The singer contemplates between staying inside, typing away and sighing, or embracing the rain and making the day less mundane. Ultimately, they decide to put on their rain boots and favorite chiffon dress, disregarding the judgments of others (the neighbors), and go out dancing in the rain.
The song also reflects on the contrast between the innocence and fascination of childhood and the weariness that comes with adulthood. The singer reminisces about their natural ability to see magic in the world as a child, but now finds it harder to be fascinated and breathe freely. The raindrops serve as a reminder to hold onto that childlike wonder and find joy even in the midst of a mundane routine.
Overall, "April" encourages listeners to break free from the monotony, embrace the simple pleasures, and find joy in the present moment.
