Ann-Margret started recording for RCA in 1961, but her recording career was not as successful as her concurrent movie career. She had a sexy, throaty singing voice comparable to Eartha Kitt or Nancy Sinatra, and RCA attempted to capitalize on her "Female Elvis" comparison by her recording a version of Presley's "Heartbreak Hotel" and other songs stylistically similar to Presley. She scored one minor hit, "I Just Don't Understand" (which entered the Billboard Top 40 in the third week of August 1961 and stayed 6 weeks, peaking at #17.) Her only charting album is The Beauty and the Beard (1964), on which she was accompanied by trumpeter Al Hirt. The contract with RCA ended in 1966.
Years later, she returned to music at the end of Disco era. Her 1980 album, "Ann-Margret" became a success with both singles, "Midnight Message" and "Love Rush" reaching the Top 10 of the Hot Dance Club Songs chart. In the early 1980s, the album was followed up with the single, "Everybody Needs Somebody Sometimes" and the B-Side "Hold Me/Squeeze Me." Ann Margret has continued to record music sporatically since then.
[edit]Film career
In 1961 she also made her film début for in Pocketful of Miracles, starring Bette Davis, Glenn Ford, and Hope Lange, a remake of the Oscar-winning 1933 film Lady for a Day; both versions were directed by the great Frank Capra. She followed that role with the successful remake of Rodgers' and Hammerstein's musical State Fair in 1962. Her next starring role, as the all-American teenager in Bye Bye Birdie, made her a major star. When she filmed Viva Las Vegas with Elvis Presley the two began an affair that received considerable attention from the gossip columnists in various media. The reports led to a showdown with a very worried Priscilla Beaulieu, which she recounts in her 1985 book, Elvis and Me, including Ann-Margret's attempt to "cut her off at the pass" with a press announcement that Ann-Margret and Elvis were engaged to be married. Although he ended the affair, Presley remained a friend and continued to send her flowers at the opening of each of her stage appearances until he died. Of all the Hollywood starlets he had worked with or had a relationship with, Ann-Margret was the only one to attend his funeral.
In 1963, Ann-Margret was featured and guest-starred, in animated form, in an episode of Hanna-Barbera's The Flintstones as "Ann-Margrock." Decades later, she recorded the theme song to the live-action film The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas in character as Ann-Margrock. The song she recorded was a modified version of the "Viva Las Vegas" theme.\
In March 1966, Ann-Margret and entertainers Chuck Day and Mickey Jones teamed up for a USO tour to entertain U.S. servicemen in remote parts of Vietnam and other parts of Southeast Asia. She still has great affection for the veterans and refers to them as "my gentlemen". [1] Ann-Margret, Day and Jones reunited for an encore of this tour for veterans and troops at Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada in November 2005. [2]
In 1971, she starred in Mike Nichols's Carnal Knowledge, marking a change from her sex-kitten musical roles, garnering a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. The following year, while performing at Lake Tahoe, Nevada, she fell 22 feet from the stage and suffered injuries that put her out of commission for several months. Throughout the 1970s, Ann-Margret balanced her live performances with a string of critically acclaimed dramatic film performances that played against her glamorous image, including Tommy in 1975, for which she was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress. In addition, she has been nominated for ten Golden Globe Awards, winning five times including Best Actress for Tommy. She also did a string of successful TV specials, starting with The Ann-Margret Show for NBC in 1968. Now in her mid-60s, she continues to act in movies.
In 1994, she published an autobiography titled Ann Margret: My Story (ISBN 0-399-13891-9). She has been married to actor Roger Smith since 1967. Smith suffers from myasthenia gravis, and Ann-Margret has devoted much of her life to caring for him.
In 2001 Ann-Margret made her first appearance in a stage musical, playing the character of Mona Stangley in a new touring production of The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas.
She has also filmed the movie "Mem-o-re", where she stars with Billy Zane and Dennis Hopper.

Old hotel, two doors down
I heard someone singing
So I went following the sound
To a room full of bodies and bottles and bliss
I remember the way you smiled when I sang the fifth
And eight years later
Across all these miles
Through recordings that you send
From a room in Chicago
A city I have never been
If I bought a ticket, would you pick me up at Berwyn
I know we're both tangled up right now
If we're being honest
I won't ask to be your constant lover
Maybe I could be your comet
So when you're out my way
You know you always have a place
Where it's warm and there's music
So bring your guitar just in case
And you're welcome to kiss me
You're welcome to stay
I'll save us a bottle of whiskey
We'll make it happen someday, hey
I know we're both tangled up right now
If we're being honest
I won't ask to be your constant lover
Maybe we could be comets
Bright, it's so bright when you fly by me
Fly by me one more time
I just delight in the sight of you
I don't have to call you mine
I know we're both tangled up right now
To be completely honest
I won't ask to be your constant lover
Maybe we could be comets
I know we're both tangled up right now
If we're being honest
I won't ask to be your constant lover
Maybe we could be comets
The lyrics of Ann-Margret's "Could it Be?" paint a picture of a serendipitous meeting and a lingering, albeit complicated, connection between two individuals. The song opens with the singer recounting the moment they first met, in an old hotel where they were drawn to the sound of someone singing. In that room filled with people, alcohol, and joy, the singer remembers how their smile lit up when they joined in with their own singing. This initial meeting sets the stage for a story that unfolds over the course of eight years.
As the song progresses, we learn that despite being physically apart for so long, the two individuals have remained connected through recordings and music. The singer mentions receiving recordings from the other person's room in Chicago, a city they have never visited. They wonder if buying a ticket would finally allow them to meet again, asking if the other person would pick them up at Berwyn. It's a longing for a reunion, a desire to bridge the gap and be in each other's presence once more.
The singer acknowledges that both of them are currently entangled in separate lives, but they don't ask to be each other's constant lover. Instead, they propose the idea of being comets. Comets are celestial objects that streak across the sky, beautiful and transient. The singer suggests that perhaps their connection doesn't have to be permanent or defined, but rather something magical and fleeting that brightens their lives when they cross paths.
In the chorus, the singer expresses their joy and fascination with the other person, describing them as bright and delightful, a sight that brings them delight without the need to possess or claim ownership. The song ends with a repetition of the idea that they won't ask for constant love, but rather they could be comets, fleeting yet impactful.
Overall, "Could it Be?" explores the complexity of human connections and the beauty that can exist in relationships that defy traditional labels. It speaks to the longing for reconnection, the acceptance of temporary happiness, and the appreciation of the unique bonds that can be formed.

The night I met you
On the evening our paths crossed
Old hotel, two doors down
In a worn-down building nearby
I heard someone singing
I detected the sound of a musical voice
So I went following the sound
Thus, I proceeded to trace its origin
To a room full of bodies and bottles and bliss
Discovered a space adorned with people, booze, and contentment
I remember the way you smiled when I sang the fifth
I retain the memory of your expression when I reached the fifth note
And eight years later
After the passage of eight years
You have drawn me back again
You have managed to attract me back once more
Across all these miles
Spanning the vast distance between us
Through recordings that you send
Via the audio files you dispatch
From a room in Chicago
From a space within the city of Chicago
A city I have never been
A metropolis I have yet to experience
If I bought a ticket, would you pick me up at Berwyn
Suppose I acquired a ticket, would you retrieve me at Berwyn?
I know we're both tangled up right now
I am aware that we are currently ensnared in complicated situations
If we're being honest
Considering the truthfulness of our circumstances
I won't ask to be your constant lover
I shall not request to become your consistently committed partner
Maybe I could be your comet
Perhaps, I could embody the essence of a comet for you
So when you're out my way
Therefore, when you happen to be in my vicinity
You know you always have a place
Rest assured that you will perpetually find solace
Where it's warm and there's music
In a location filled with warmth and melodious tunes
So bring your guitar just in case
Hence, carry your guitar as a precautionary measure
And you're welcome to kiss me
Furthermore, you are invited to bestow a kiss upon me
You're welcome to stay
You are gladly welcomed to remain
I'll save us a bottle of whiskey
I shall reserve a bottle of whiskey for our enjoyment
We'll make it happen someday, hey
Together, we will actualize this someday, hey
Bright, it's so bright when you fly by me
Vivid, it is incredibly vibrant when you swiftly pass me
Fly by me one more time
Glide past me once again
I just delight in the sight of you
I simply revel in the pleasure of witnessing you
I don't have to call you mine
It is not necessary for me to claim possession of you
To be completely honest
To be entirely frank
Maybe we could be comets
It is conceivable that we could become comets
