[Originally by John Lennon]
People say we got it made don't they know we're so afraid
We're afraid to be alone, everbody got to have a home
Isolation
Trying to change the whole wide world
Isolation
All the world is a little town
Everybody trying to put us down
Isolation
I don't expect you to understand
After you caused so much pain
But the again you're not to blame
Your just a human, a victim of the insane
We're afrain of everyone, afraid of the sun
Isolation
The Sun will never disappear
But the world my not have many years
Isolation
The song "Isolation" by Ann Wilson is actually a cover of John Lennon's original song, and it speaks to the human desire for companionship and our instinctual fear of being alone. The lyrics suggest that even though people might think we have everything under control, we are really just as scared as everyone else. The lines "don't they know we're so afraid" and "we're afraid to be alone, everybody's got to have a home" are particularly poignant in highlighting our innate desire for a sense of belonging, that we all need a place to call home where we feel safe and accepted.
The song continues with a focus on the struggle for change in the face of a world that is often hostile towards those who try to make a difference. We see this in the lines "just a boy and a little girl, trying to change the whole wide world" and "all the world is a little town, everybody trying to put us down". The theme of isolation is woven throughout the song, with references to the sun ("afraid of the sun") and the potential for the world to become an isolated place ("the world may not have many years").
All in all, "Isolation" is a hauntingly beautiful song that highlights our fears of being alone and our struggles to make positive changes in the world. Through these themes, the song speaks to something universal in the human experience.
