Just For Show
Anna Scouten Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Sold our clothes to the fair,
and we cut off our hair,
like two kids on the run from the law.
Hit the road with a pack,
have no date to come back,
got the plan from a movie you saw.
It took all that I had,
to admit I was sad, to be leaving here once and for all.
It took all that I had-
got no need to turn back
in a week I'll forget to have called.
Without taking a look,
pass the towns in your book.
I'm the queen of your old car's front seat.
and "all my heroes are dead" is all that you said
when we thought about who we could meet.
It took all that I had-
bait my tongue and stood back.
Know the words and the names,
just for show.
It took all that I had,
with pursed lips,
(not too alive OR start to lie)
You know everything you wish to know,
Don't you?
Don't you?
Mhhm.
For the stories, you tell
I'd expect you'd know well,
all the corners and holes in your mind.
But all your stories are dead,
when you said in your head, beat the drum shared by all your kind.
It took all that I had, not to say I was glad,
I'd be seeing your face not at all.
It took all that I had,
bait my tongue and stood back.
It's a trap I am glad to not fall,

into,
into.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Anna Scouten's "Just For Show" tell the story of two people who leave their lives behind to go on an adventure. They sell their clothes to the fair and cut off their hair like they're on the run from the law. They hit the road with no plans to return, and the idea came from a movie that one of them had seen. The singer of the song admits that it took all the strength she had to reveal her sadness of leaving without any plans to return. However, she had no need to turn back, and in a week, she will have forgotten to call.

As they pass towns in the old car, the singer is filled with a sense of pride, feeling like the queen of the front seat. Her partner, on the other hand, seems to be more contemplative, talking about how all of their heroes are dead, and wondering who they could meet. The singer tries to keep up with the conversation, knowing the words and names just for show, with pursed lips. She knows everything she wishes to know and doesn't need to engage in small talk.

The chorus of the song talks about how the singer had to hold back from saying she was glad to be leaving and bait her tongue; she's happy not to fall into the trap that her partner is falling into. The song comes to a close, and the two continue on their adventure, looking for more stories to tell and more adventures to experience.

For the stories, you tell I'd expect you'd know well, all the corners and holes in your mind.
Based on the stories that you tell, I expected you to know and understand yourself better than this.

But all your stories are dead, when you said in your head, beat the drum shared by all your kind.
It seems that your stories are hollow because of your mentality, following the same mundane, expected patterns as everyone else.

It took all that I had, not to say I was glad, I'd be seeing your face not at all.
I had to stop myself from expressing that I was happy with the idea of not seeing you again after this.

It's a trap I am glad to not fall, into, into.
Whatever it is that is keeping you stuck in your ways, I'm glad I'm not falling into the same trap as you, repeating the same patterns over and over again.
