After a chance meeting with an aspiring singer/songwriter, she managed to secure some studio time in Elton John's Rocket Studios, and, after hearing what she could do, she was subsequently picked up by Elton's management company Rocket Music. Anne-Marie released a demo in 2013 entitled Summer Girl, which drew some attention to the singer, most notably garnering a fan in Ed Sheeran. Despite the encouraging start to her solo career, things were put on hold to give her more time to develop as an artist.
Having guested on tracks by dubstep supergroup Magnetic Man, London-based garage duo Gorgon City, and progressive house trio Raized by Wolves, Anne-Marie caught the attention of Brit and MOBO award winners Rudimental. She was featured alongside Dizzee Rascal and Will Heard on two tracks from their second album, 2015's We the Generation, and spent two years touring with the band, playing some of the world's biggest stages and best-known festivals.
The summer of that year also saw the release of Anne-Marie's debut EP on Rudimental's then-new record label, Major Tom's. The aptly titled Karate EP featured three tracks and a Chloe Martini remix, and producers Josh Record and Two Inch Punch worked with her on the record. Both the lead single "Karate," a slick fusion of electro-grime and R&B, and the follow-up "Gemini," garnered some very positive reviews and led Anne-Marie to gigging as a solo artist. In early 2016, the single "Do It Right" reached the U.K. charts, and several months later "Alarm" hit the Top 40 in several charts around the world.
In 2017, Anne-Marie scored a hit single when she featured on Clean Bandit's multi-platinum "Rockabye" with Sean Paul. The song topped the charts across Europe and in Australia, breaking into the Top Ten in Canada and the U.S. She followed with the solo singles "Ciao Adios" and "Heavy," which both charted in the U.K. and Ireland. Both tracks appeared on her debut full-length, Speak Your Mind, which saw release in April 2018. The record also featured the track "Friends," written and recorded with American dance producer Marshmello.

Thank fuck I figured it out, yeah
I don't need your love, I don't need your love
I'm better off without you
Won't waste time thinking about you
I don't need your love, I don't need your love
I'm better
It ain't the timing that's wrong, it's the person that isn't right
You made me feel like you were never really mine
You get mad at me but don't say why
I wanna know, wanna know, wanna know
When I'm with somebody I'm all they want
But you never made me feel that way at all
You thought I'd cry over you, haha
I'm better off without you
Thank fuck I figured it out, yeah
I don't need your love, I don't need your love
I'm better off without you
Won't waste time thinking about you
I don't need your love, I don't need your love
I'm better off
I'm better, better
Yeah, I'm better off
Huh, I'm better, I'm better
I'm better off
I'll put your clothes in a bag
Just calling up to say
"Can I throw this shit away?
And could you send me the keys you still got to my place?"
Not like you ever stayed
I wanna know, wanna know, wanna know
When I'm with somebody I'm all they want
But you never made me feel that way at all
You thought I'd cry over you, haha
I'm better off without you
Thank fuck I figured it out, yeah
I don't need your love, I don't need your love
I'm better off without you
Won't waste time thinking about you
I don't need your love, I don't need your love
I'm better off
I'm better, better
Yeah, I'm better off
Huh, I'm better, I'm better
I'm better off
You're out of luck
If you're caught up in nostalgia, baby
Told you I'm not
Not caught up in my feelings
You're out of luck
If you're caught up in nostalgia, baby
Told you I'm not
Not caught up in my feelings, yeah
In Anne-Marie's song "Better Off," the lyrics convey a sense of empowerment and liberation from a toxic relationship. The singer confidently declares that she is better off without her former partner and expresses gratitude for realizing this truth. The repetition of the phrase "I don't need your love" reinforces her independence and self-sufficiency. By acknowledging that she won't waste time thinking about her ex and expressing relief at being free from the relationship, the singer asserts her determination to move forward and prioritize her own well-being.
The lyrics delve into the issues that led to the breakup, highlighting the frequent conflicts and lack of emotional connection between the singer and her ex-partner. The acknowledgment that the person, not the timing, was the source of the relationship's problems underscores the importance of compatibility and mutual respect in a healthy partnership. The singer reflects on feeling unimportant and unheard in the relationship, emphasizing the emotional distance that existed between them. The refusal to dwell on the past and the decision to focus on personal growth and happiness signal a conscious choice to prioritize self-love and self-worth.
The imagery of packing up the ex-partner's belongings and requesting the return of keys symbolizes the physical and emotional closure of the relationship. By reclaiming agency and setting boundaries, the singer asserts her independence and readiness to move on. The dismissive tone towards the ex-partner's belongings and lack of emotional attachment further underscore her resolve to break free from the past. The request for closure through returning items and disengaging from lingering ties denotes a clear break from the past, signaling a fresh start and freedom from the constraints of the past relationship.
The defiant declaration in the final verses of the song dismisses any potential nostalgia or longing for the past, firmly asserting the singer's strength and emotional resilience. By affirming that she is not entangled in her emotions or dwelling on the past, the singer emphasizes her commitment to personal growth and moving forward. The repeated assertion that she is "better off" serves as a triumphant declaration of self-worth and independence, signaling a newfound sense of empowerment and freedom from a relationship that no longer serves her.

[Verse 1]
I gave it all to you
Until I had nothing to give, but you wasn't shit
Can't believe that I fell for you
Should've knew better than this, the moment we kissed
I thought I could trust in you
Your feelings, they wasn't legit, wish I could forget
I can't stand the thought of you
Your OG should've swallowed you
[Chorus]
Or maybe I'm just lucky (I mean)
Invested all that time for nothing (I mean what you thought, you was gon' replace me with somethin'?)
But now I'm just like, fuck it (fuck)
'Cause I'm better off than you, I'm better off than you
[Verse 2]
I bet I'ma be, the reason that you losing sleep
Fucking her just to get over me
Compare her to me
Your new bitch, she cannot compete
That shit that a blind man can see
Fuck did you thought
Speak to me, now it's gon' cost
Shorty I know that the thought
Of a new nigga eating and beating it raw
It's killing you, I know it's hurting your heart, fuck
[chorus]
Now I'm just like fuck it
Invested all that time for nothing
'Cause I'm better off than you, I'm better off than you
I was good before you met me but I bet you won't forget me
I was good before you met me but I bet you won't forget me
I'm better off than you, I'm better off than you
I'm better off than you, I'm better off than you
