My Love
Anne-Marie Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Posed for you
Lied for you
Cried for you
We're always fuckin' die for you
Scorched my fuckin hair for you
Took care of you
We're always fuckin there for you
You make me think that you value my opinion
Then you use it assert your own dominion
You'd think being a black woman is easier because it's cool now
Mostly feels like goin' back to school now
Got two degrees
Stopped playin' with niggas that wasted they schools fees
Taking shots to the feet you should be kissin'
Paid the deposit for the home he live in
New religion
Putting a cap on the access till you show me some damn respect
Why I'm stressed?
Some of you niggas won't even pick up a check
I've seen you do it
I've seen you do it
For Courtenay and Lilly and Emma and Beth
When
I ripped my heart out as a symbol of my love
I ripped my heart out as a symbol of my love
You missed it
Those ain't our hips
Those ain't our lips
Not how our butts lift
I think I'd like to take a Black Break
A long ass blackout outta give the world a shake
Cut the music
Cut the sayings
No more spices
No more BAYANGS
I'll think I'll stop letting white girls watch me when I dance
Cuz if they're gonna use our shit we should charge a black tax
That sounds nice
I think I will
I just might
Give credit to black women where it's due
Request a refund from your doctors
Cuz we're the ones that made you
I ripped my heart out as a symbol of my love
I ripped my heart out as a symbol of my love
I ain't do it for the thrill of it
I'm tired of waking up to see the same shit
Truth be told I'm fuckin' losing it
Wake me up when it starts makin' some sense
I maxed out on all the fucks I gave
I hope this feeling's temporary cuz I'm losin' faith
Yal tried me in my dms and I set em straight
Cuz I'm a boss and a bitch
And I ain't playin' games
I'm tired of hearin' I'm pretty for a black girl
I'm tired of hearin' I'm pretty for a black girl
We ain't march for 'pretty for a black girl'
I can not come and die for THAT
They love everything about us but us
Everything about us but us
Fists up in the air for you
But deep down often a lil of scared you
I ripped my heart out as a symbol of my love
(Wake me when I am home again)
I ripped my heart out as a symbol of my love
(Wake me when I am whole again)

Wake me when I am free again
I ripped my heart out as a symbol of my love

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Anne-Marie's song My Love are a powerful commentary on the intersection between race, gender, and power dynamics. The first verse seems to speak directly to an individual in a toxic relationship, who has lied, cried, and even scorching their own hair for the sake of their partner's affection. Despite the singer being there for this person through thick and thin, they are still manipulated and undermined. The lyrics become increasingly focused on issues of racial identity and the challenges faced as a black woman in society. The singer sings about feeling undervalued and exploited by those who claim to appreciate her opinion or her culture while still taking it for granted. She also touches on the idea of black culture being co-opted and exploited by others. The line "if they're gonna use our shit we should charge a black tax" is particularly impactful, as it highlights the idea that black people are often expected to give their culture away for free.

The chorus of the song is repeated several times throughout the song, adding weight and emphasis to its message. "I ripped my heart out as a symbol of my love" suggests a willingness to give everything up for someone or something, only to be taken advantage of and left feeling hollow. The final line, "Wake me when I am free again," speaks to the desire for change and the hope that someday things will be different.

Overall, the lyrics of My Love are a powerful statement on the intersecting issues of race and gender, and the ways in which these dynamics impact the lives of black women.

Call it love and devotion
Call it the mom’s adoration
Foundation
A special bond of creation, hah
For all the single mums out there going through frustration
Clean Bandit, Sean-da-Paul, Anne-Marie

She works the night, by the water
She's gonna stress, so far away
From her father's daughter
She just wants a life for her baby
All on her own, no one will come
She's got to save him (daily struggle)

She tells him "oh, love, no one's ever gonna hurt you, love
I'm gonna give you all of my love
Nobody matters like you"
She tells him "your life ain't gonna be nothing like my life
You're gonna grow and have a good life
I'm gonna do what I've got to do"

So, Rockabye baby, Rockabye
I'm gonna rock you
Rockabye baby, don't you cry
Somebody's got you
Rockabye baby, Rockabye
I'm gonna rock you
Rockabye baby, don't you cry
Rockabye, no
Rockabye-rocka-rocka-rocka-bye
Rockabye, oh oh yeah
Rockabye-rocka-rocka-rocka-bye

Single mama you doing out there
Facing the hard life, without no fear
Just so you know that you really care
Cause any obstacle come you’re well prepared
And no mama, you never set tear
Cause you have to set things year and to year
And you give the youth love beyond compare
You find his school fee and the bus fare
Mmm Marie, the paps' disappear
In the round back can’t find him nowhere
Steadily you work flow, everything you know
You know say you nuh stop the time fi a jear

Now she gotta a six year old
Trying to keep him warm
Trying to keep out the cold
When he looks her in the eyes
He don't know he's safe

When she says "uh, love, no one's ever gonna hurt you, love
I'm gonna give you all of my love
Nobody matters like you"

So, Rockabye baby, Rockabye
I'm gonna rock you
Rockabye baby, don't you cry
Somebody's got you
Rockabye baby, Rockabye
I'm gonna rock you
Rockabye baby, don't you cry
Bidda-bang-bang-bang, alright then
Rockabye, no

Rockabye, oh oh yeah

@anastasiaspyropoulou4017

I really do believe that the pole dancing that this mother does as a job in this video also symbolizes all the jobs that mothers have to do that aren't socially acceptable, all the struggle at any point in order to raise their babies(because let's face it,we're always babies to them).
My mother is not single but we're talking about mothers in here....she's worked very hard to raise me,she's amazing.

"Facing the hard life without no fear
Just see and know that you really care
'Cause any obstacle come you well prepared"

Shout out to her and all the mothers that are pure miracles themselves and badasses.
We freaking love you.
