Ross is one of the early practitioners of a singing style known as vocalese, which involves the setting of original lyrics to an instrumental jazz solo. Her 1952 treatment of saxophonist Wardell Gray's "Twisted" is a classic example of vocalese. "Twisted" is perhaps her most famous song.
She recorded seven albums with Lambert, Hendricks & Ross between 1957 and 1962. Annie left the group in 1962 and in 1964 opened her own nightclub in London. Annie's Room featured performances by such jazz luminaries as Joe Williams, Stuff Smith, Blossom Dearie, Anita O'Day, Jon Hendricks, and Erroll Garner as well as Annie herself.
Ross is also an accomplished actress and has appeared in a number of films: Superman III (1983), Throw Mama From The Train (1987), Pump Up the Volume (1990), Blue Sky (1994), Short Cuts (1993).
Day In Day Out
Annie Ross Lyrics

The same old hoodoo follows me about
The same old pounding in my heart whenever I think of you
And, darling, I think of you
Day in and day out
Day out, day in
I needn't tell you how my days begin
One possibility in view
That possibility of maybe seeing you
Come rain, come shine
I meet you and to me the day is fine
Then I kiss your lips
And the pounding becomes
The ocean's roar
A thousand drums
Can't you see it's love
Can there be any doubt
When there it is
Day in, day out
The lyrics to Annie Ross's Day In Day Out highlight the overwhelming presence of love in one's life, and how it consumes every moment, every thought, and every heartbeat. The singer expresses how they can't shake off the same old hoodoo that follows them, and the same old pounding in their heart whenever they think of their loved one. In fact, they think of them day in, day out. This demonstrates how even the most mundane and routine activities of our daily lives are inundated with the thought of the one we love. The lyrics capture the all-consuming passion and desire for one's love interest.
The singer gives us a glimpse into their day, and how their day-to-day activities draw significance and meaning in the context of their love. They talk about how the possibility of maybe seeing their loved one brings a tingle to their day, and how meeting them in rain or shine makes their day fine. The mention of how the pounding in their heart becomes the ocean's roar and a thousand drums when they kiss their loved one's lips shows the power and intensity of their love. The lyrics conclude with the singer expressing how there can be no doubt that their love is true and all-encompassing.
Overall, the lyrics convey a sense of how love takes over our lives and makes us see things in a new and different light. It is the beauty and the magic of love that makes even the most mundane activities of our daily lives significant.

Annie Ross was a beautiful musician. Nobody today can touch her level of talent, skill, charisma, and loveliness. So nice how she touched Count Basie's arm. A true lady. Class.

The vocal line is almost note for note to the original instrumental by Wardell Gray who wrote the song (Annie Ross added the lyrics). Gray is underappreciated as a Be-Bop great..... Look him up....

I love Joni Mitchell's cover with Cheech and Chong on her Court 'n Spark album. Nice to see the original here.

This is everything I thought society would inevitably come to, hip, cool, respect for all peoples regardless of their color, coming together to enjoy what each person had to offer and have a good time becoming a better person/society. Boy, how our US society has marched backwards from this ideal, just religious hatred, intolerance, and bigotry, hatred for intelligence and knowledge! It's just incredible how much we have regressed in such a short period of time!

Wow she was only 29 yrs.old! Love this with great company...when television was in its golden age in my opinion. R I.P. Annie.

I remember watching this on TV as a 8 year old kid in 1959 after watching "Dobbie Gillis". I was really into the beatnick/hipster thing with Maymard G. Krebs etc. This song is a classic. Still sounds awefully good and hip.
